The presentimproved,construction has in View to provide means `for maintaining the working table inivertical alinement with the supporting base, with exclusion of impuritiesin theatmosphere. and also for continuously maintaining an accurate slidinglt at the cornerportions ot themachine. Also, to provide alarge flat continuous impact suraceatory the table, for absorption of the shock on its downward movement,` with means for retaining the impact elements in operative relatioinfand for restraining the table from undue upward movement, with other :teatures of detail construction, as shall be more ullv hereinafter described.
Generally stated, the machine comprises a oundation'base or traine, having a centrally arranged cylinder, a vibrating table'provided with a plunger mounted in the cylinder, an automatically operating valve for admitting and releasing pressure to and from the cylinder for alternate `operation of the plunger andtable, together with suitableflubrieating means, and the Jeatures above particularly noted. i Y

The jarring table 12 extendsacross the entire upper portion of the supportingifrarne by its upper 'table top and is providedvwitha downwardly extending .interior skeleton framework 13. The latter isprov-idedwith Vthe supporting bottom 14 adapted to make contact with the jarring plate 10, andis alternately raised byf the plunger 5 and lowered by gravity upon admission and exhaust of a suitable -fluid :under pressure. 1 The middle interior portion of the @table 12 isprovided with an :annular `framezor ring T125 againstu Cil which abuts and to which is secured the upper flange 1G of the plunger 5.
The plunger is alternately raised and lowered by admission of fiuid under pressure through the valve A, the stem of which is lifted and lowered by the connecting yoke 17 of the valve secured as at 18 in the lower body portion of the table at one side of the plunger cavity.
The stem 19 of the valve is connected with the cylindrical slide valve 2O by its terminal having the nut 21 and collar 22 providing for a limited amount of lost motion at each side of the middle collar 23 of the valve. The stem 17 being connected with the table Ywill rise with the rise of the table under pressure, cutting off the pressure supply through inlet pipe B and opening the exhaust ports for escape of the previously used pressure fluid through exhaust pipe C upon alernate lowering of the table. Likewise, lowering of the table. after a limited amount of lost motion of stem 19, will shift the valve downwardly, closin the exhaust ports and opening the 'supply for another lifting operation.
rIhe corner wall portions 9 of' the main base provide outer guiding housings for the table, which is provided at each corner with the wearing faces 24 planed at right angles to each other and providing for vertical guidin movement within coacting wearing plates 25. The wearing plates 25 are mounted within the upwardly extending corner wall portions 9 by means of series of upper and lower studs and bolts 26, 27, respectively. The contacting faces of such plates, with the corner faces 24 of the table, are accurately fitted for vertical sliding movement one against the other, during vertical reciprocation of the table throughout its limited range of movement.
For the purpose of protecting the interior of the construction and preventing access of dust or other foreign matter to such wearing faces. I provide outer enclosing covering plates 28 of thin sheet or plate metal, screwed to the edges of table l2 as shown, and extending downwardly over the outer portion of walls 9 so as to slide thereon with a close fit, effectually excluding such objectionable impure air circulation. The upper outer edge portion of wall 9 is preferably planed or faced as at 29 to provide a smooth wearing fit for the reciprocating closing plate 28 in its upward and downward movement.
The working faces 241 are furnished with lubricant at suitable points, by the terminals 39 of the lubricating system more fully described in my companion application, Serial No. 237,629. Y
F or the purpose of loosely retaining the impact or jarring plate 10 in operativeI position, and in continuous bearing contact against the shock absorbent blanket 11, I provide a seriesof retaining studs 30 which extend upwardly through the top plate 8 of the base and are tapped into the plate 10 at suitably arranged locations, as at 31. Studs 30 extend downwardly through the blanket 11 and loosely through holes in base plate 8 and are provided with nuts 32 and cushioning springs 33. A number of such studs are symmetrically arranged around the middle of the machine, as in Fig. 2, and operate to continuously hold the impact plates together or to restrain them against any material upward movement due to suction or other causes.
Likewise, for the purpose of restraining the table from. any undue upward movement, I provide the safety rods 34 shown in F ig. 5. These are located in the manner shown, one at each side of the center, and extend upwardly through openings 35 in base plate 8 and are secured as by screw threads in the lower impact plate 7 of the table, as indicated at 36. The bolts 34. extend downwardly through the impact plates and the base, and are provided with terminal heads 37 and short cushioning springs 38.
Springs 33 are comparatively short and are adapted. to allow for the desired limited range of upward movement of the table under jarring action of the valve-controlled plunger, and to then come into contact with the under side of the base plate or reinforced lugs thereon to restrain and cushion further upward movement.
By such means the normal table movement is regulated and limited so as to avoid any undesired excess travel. The springs likewise assist in effecting a quick rebound or downward movement of the table upon release of the pressure beneath the plunger.
With the machine operating in the manner intended, with continuous alternate vertical reciprocations, and with the accurate guiding and limiting action of the means above described, together with proper lubrication, it will continue to function efficiently, avoiding wear, with protection of the parts from intrusion of sand or other gritty foreign material. The absorption of the shocks of impact is effected by the broad area provided by plate 10 and blanket 11, and the operation is greatly improved and the noise resulting therefrom is materially reduced, while adding to the regularity of operation otherwise.
An important object of the invention is to provide for ample air circulation through the interior of the machine, to compensate for suction and compression resulting from the reciprocation of the table within the closure effected by plates 28.
Thus, as the table rises above floor 8, it will tend to create a retarding vacuum, and to compress the air ou downward stroke, with objectionable resistance to free movement in either direction. I obviate these objections by providing air circulation or breathing openings and passages through the base and its floor upwardly to the table containing cavity, with means providing for a clean air supply.
For such purpose one or more clean air conduits are connected through opening 41 in the outer wall of the main base 2. The interior reinforcing walls 42 of the base are transversely apertured as at 43 for free air circulation, and at suitable points the floor 8 is provided with similar circulating openings 44. By this means there is a constant free open communication from above the floor, or the table cavity, to the outside atmosphere, so that as the table moves up and down, any tendency to suction and partal vacuum, or compression, is completely avoided. By filtering or screening the air entering conduit 4U, all sand or other foreign matter is excluded.
The arring plate 1() and blanket 11 are so shaped at their inner edge portions around the plunger cylinder as to leave the openings 44 uncovered, without materially reducing the bearing area of the jarring plate and blanket.
What I claim is l. In a molding machine, the combination with a supporting base having a central plunger cavity, outer upwardly projecting walls, an intervening flat bearing surface, and
c a reciprocable table thereon, of a continuous fiat layer of shock absorbing material laid on the flat bearing surface of the base, a superimposed impact plate thereon for contact with the table, and spring retracted bolts engaging the impact plate.-
2, In a molding machine, the combination with a supporting base having a central plunger cavity, outer upwardly projecting walls, an intervening fiat bearing surface, and a reciprocable table thereon, of a continuous flat layer of shock absorbing material laid on the flat bearing surface of the base, a superimposed impact plate laid directly thereon for contact with the table above and the shock absorbing material below, and resilient retaining means therefor.
3. In a molding machine, the combination with a supporting base having a central plunger cavity, outer upwardly projecting walls, an intervening flat bearing surface, and
a reciprocable table thereon, of a continuous flat layer of shock absorbing material laid on the flat bearing surface of the base, a superimposed impact plate thereon for contact with i the table above and the shock absorbing material below, and retaining means therefor providing for limited vertical movement of the impact plate.

In a molding machine, the combination with a .supporting base having a central plunger cavity, outer upwardly projecting walls, an intervening floor providing a continuously flat bearing surface, and a reciprocable table having a flat bottom extending downwardly between the walls, of a layer of shock absorbing material laid on the base floor, a jarring plate laid thereon and holding studs .for the table extending downwardly through the jarring plate and shock absorbmg material and the floor and provided with buttlng springs spaced below Vthe yunderside of the floor providing for a limited upward travel of the table and resulting cushioning resistance.
7 In a molding machine, the combination of a supporting base having upwardly proj ecting walls, and a reciprocable table thereon having a downwardly extending inner bumping portion within the walls and a top ex* tending over the upper wall edges, and provided with a guiding cover plate secured to the edges of the table top and extending downwardly in close fitting engagement with the outer sides of the walls.
8. In a molding machine, the combination with a rectangular supporting base having a transverse floor, a middle plunger, and upwardly extending walls having inner corner bearing plates, of a reciprocable table engaging said bearing plates and provided with outer protecting and guiding plates secured to its edges and extending downwardly in close fitting engagement with the outer faces of the base walls.
9. In a machine for jarring sand molds, a
supporting base having an upper floor provided with an air circulating opening, and means establishing communication between said opening and the outside atmosphere including inner vertical walls having openings and an outer wall having an air supply conduit.
