The invention relates to rotary printing presses, and more particularly to a novel and useful arrangement of printing units and folders.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims;
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serve to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawings Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic elevation of a Jrintim ressunit embod in the invention and Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic top plan of two side by side press units in accordance with certain features of the invention.
The invention is exemplarily applied. to rotary, perfecting printing presses of the socalled unit type, and is directed primarily to providing a rotary perfecting press capacitated to produce a maximum diversity of different sizes of perfected and folded products, within the limits of the facilities of the press, and at the same time utilizing the total capacity of the press in the production of most of these products, and employing most of the capacity of the press in the production of the few other products.
The invention is further directed to-providing in juxtaposition a plurality of press units having the characteristics already described, which normally operate independently, but are constructed and capacitated for joint operation on some of the webs for certain sizes of products in order to utilize to a greater extent the total facilities of both presses than if they were run separately on said sizes. That is, for certain size products, all the printing units in both press units are run, but certain of the webs printed by one press unit are associated with webs printed by the other press unit,'and they are folded together by a folding mechanism of said other press unit.
With these and other objects in view, the invention provides a press unit comprising a horizontally-disposed series of printing units, and a similar but shorter horizontally-disposed series of printing units superimposed above said iirst series of printing units, with folding mechanisms interposed between certain of the printing units, all in a definite relation as hereinafter more fully described. he number and arrangement will be such that a very great variety of the more frequently required sizes of papers may be produced by means of the different possible web runs and combinations, While in the production of nearly all these sizes the total capacity of the press is employed, with no printing units remaining idle.
In connection with that feature of my invention including the conjoint use of two such press units in producing certain sized products, I include in the press structure turning bars, usually full width, located preferably above the ends of the lower series of press units and at either end of the upper series of press units, for directing one or more printed webs across from one press to the other, to be associated with other webs printed by said other press. The thus associated perfected webs are then folded together, thereby fully utilizing the printing capacity of both press units, which advantage is not effected if these sizes were run from the press units separately.
Referring to the particular embodiment, illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, a size of press has been selected for producing sextuples, octuples and double sextuples and octuples. The showing in the drawings is diagrammatic in character, as the details of the press construction may be the usual construction of the unit press type, or any other known suitable construction, d need not be described in detail.
The press unit of my invention, as exemplarily embodied in the size and kind of press in dicated, comprises a lower horizontally-disposed series of perfecting printing units. These units are set in longitudinal alinement on a press base frame 1, resting on the press room floor 2, carried by a frame structure 3. The respective printing units each include two printing couples, ea'ch couple having a form cylinder 4; and an impression cylinder 5, mounted in a unit frame 6 mounted on the base frame 1, and adapted to perfect a web running through the couples in the usual manner. Each unit has an inking mechanism for its plate cylinder, and these may be of any known or suitable form, and are omitted for the sake of clearness.
In the exemplified press, this lower series comprises eight perfecting printing units with three sets of folding mechanism interposed. The printing units are indicated in order, for the sake of sequence designation later herein, by the letters of the alphabet from A to H. A first folder F-1 is interposed between the units B and C, a second folder F2 is interposed between the units B and l), and a third folder F3 between units If and G, as best appears from Fig. 1.
The press unit, as considered herein, further comprises an upper, horizontally-disposed series of printing units, disposed vertically above and in superimposition upon the first or lower series of printing units just described. In this particular exemplified press, this second and upper series of printing units comprises four units, designated by the letters I to L. The two printing units I and J are located between the folders I -1 and F2, and the other two printing units, K and L are interposed between the folders I"2 and 1 -3.
This arrangement just described, and illustrated in the drawings, divides the press room into a main tier or series of printing units, namely, the lower series A to ll, fed from a main reel room, or web supply room, below, and an auxiliary tier or series of printing units, the upper series I to L, fed from the upper auxiliary reel room, or web supply room. This constitutes a very great advantage, in addition to those previously stated, due to the fact that the upper auxiliary reel room has only four web reel. mechanisms for each press unit, the remainder of the floor space being available for paper storage.
The paper supply mechanisms 11 for the various press units are conveniently located for the units of the lower series just underneath the corresponding press units and underneath the floor of the press-room, as shown in Fig. 1. The webs are threaded upwardly and through the two printing couples of the corresponding printing unit, and thence selectively to one or the other of the folders, by any suitable arrangement of guide rollers 13, or turning bars or half-width turning bars 1. 1,
The paper supply devices 12 for the printing units of the upper and superimposed series of printing units are conveniently located ust above their respective printing units, and the webs are led down therefrom through the perfecting couples and thence by any suitable guide rollers 13 and turi'iing bars 1% to the proper folding mechanisms. In a convenient construction and arrangement, these web supplying devices for the top printing units may be on the next floor 15 of the building, where by the supply rolls are brought in on the precise level where needed, and all lifting thereof is avoided. The floor space at either end of the paper supply units for the upper series of printing units and just above the outer ends of the lower series of printing units may be conveniently utilized for paper storage.
Referring now to the features of my invention whereby two of the press units are em-- ployed together for the purpose of securing certain sized products while utilizing all of the printing units of the two press units, means are provided for directing certain perfected webs across from one printing unit to the other side by side unit to be there associated with perfected webs from said other unit, and the associated webs are folded to gether on one of the folders of said last-mentioned unit. As embodied two full width, that is, four-page-wide turner bars 21 and 22 are mounted above the printing units A-B at one end of the lower series of the press units, and two like turner bars and 24 are located above the printing units GH at t ie other end of said series, these turner bars being conveniently at the level of and at either end of the uppermost series of printing units of the press unit. The perfected webs which in the desired arrangements or sizes of product are run across from the turner bars of one press unit to those of the other unit, are thence associated with other perfected webs from this second. press unit, the webs being usually slit and then folded by one of the folding mechanisms of the second press unit.
The folding mechanism, F1, F-2 and F-3, may be of any suitable or known form, so far as concerns the broader features of the invention, and are shown herein only diagrammatically. They usually comprise two side-by-side half- width formers 29 and 30 in alinement with the printing units of the upper series and two side-by-si-de half-width formers 31 and 32, directly below and in line with the foregoing, and on the level of the printing units of the lowermost horizontally disposed series. The cross folders are indicated diagrammatically at Slitters 84 and other half-width angle bars, guide rolls and the like will be supplied as may be necessary or advantageous.

What I claim is 1. A printing press including in combina tion a plurality of printing units arranged in a horizontally and longitudinally disposed series, a plurality of folders interposed symmetrically in said series, and an upper horizontally and longitudinally disposed series of printing units shorter than and superposed symmetrically with respect to said lowerseries of printing units and folders.

A printing press including in combination a plurality of side by side press units, each comprising a longitudinally disposed series of printing units and folders interposed in said series, and full width turner bars in symmetrical relation on the two press units whereby a web perfected by one press unit may be associated with a web perfected by a second press unit and the associated webs be folded by a folder of said second press unit.

A printing press including in combination a plurality of side by side press units, each comprising a longitudinally disposed series of printing units, a plurality of folders interposed in said series of printing units, a second shorter longitudinally disposed series of'printing units superposed symmetrically upon said first series of printing units, full width turner bars at either end of said superposed series and above the ends of the lower series of printing units, whereby a web perfected by one press unit may be associated with a web perfected by a second. press unit and the associated webs be folded by a folder of said second press unit.
9. A printing press including in combination a plurality of side by side press units, each comprising a longitudinally disposed series of printing units, a plurality of folders interposed in symmetrical relation in said series of printing units, a second shorter longitudinally disposed series of printing units superposed symmetrically upon said first series of printing units, full width turner bars at either end of said superposed series and above the ends of the lower series of printing units, whereby a web perfected by one press unit may be associated with a web perfect-ed by a. second press unit and the associated webs be folded by a folder of said second press unit.
10. A printing press including in combination two side by side printing units, each comprising a lower series of eight longitudinally disposed printing units, three folders interposed symmetrically in said series of printing units, an upper series of four longitudinally disposed printing units, superposed upon and symmetrically disposed with respect to its lower series of printing units and the folders, and turner bars on both units, whereby a web perfected by one press unit may be associated with a web perfected by a second press unit and the asociated webs be folded by a folder of said second press unit.
11. A printing press including in combination two side by side printing units, each comprising a lower series of eight longitudinally disposed printing units, three folders interposed symmetrically in said series of printing units, an upper series of four longitudinally disposed printing units, superposed upon and symmetrically disposed with respect to its lower series of printing units and the folders, and full width turner bars at either end of the upper series of printing units, and above the ends of the lower series of printing units of each press unit, whereby a web perfected by one press unit may be associated with a web perfected by a second press unit and the associated webs be folded by a folder of said second press unit.
12. A rotary printing press adapted to produce three octuples and including in combination a longitudinally disposed series of print ing units and interposed folders, and a superposed longitudinally disposed series of printing units, means for directing the webs from the first three units of the lower series and the first unit of the upper series to the first folder, means for directing the webs from the fourth and fifth units of the first series and the second and third of the upper series to the second folder, and means for directing the webs from the next three units of the lower series and the neXt unit of the upper series to the third folder.

A rotary printing press adapted to produce two double seXt-uples and including in combination a longitudinally disposed series of printing units and interposed folders, and a superposed longitudinally disposed series of printing units, means for directing the webs from the first four printing units of the lower series and from the first two units of the upper series to one folder and means for directing the webs from the next four printing units of the lower series and the next two units of the upper series to another folder.
14. A printing press for producing three double octuples and including in combination two press units, each comprising a lower longitudinally disposed series of printing units and interposed folders and a superposed longitudinally disposed series of printing units, means for directing the webs from the first two printing units of the lower series of the first press unit and from the first four units of the lower series and the first two units of the upper series of the second press unit to one folder, means for directing the webs from the third, fourth, fifth and sixth units of the lower series and from four units of said first press unit to another folder, and means for directing the webs from the seventh and eighth printing units of said first press unit, and from the fifth sixth, seventh and eighth of the lower series and the third and fourth of the upper series of said second printing unit to another folder.

A printing press including in combi nation a plurality of printing units arranged in two longitudinal series, one above another an ewre inte p ed.- in the er he 1 W- ermost series extending beyond the upper, paper suply mechanisms for the respective printing units, those for the lower units being located directly beneath the units, and those for the upper units being located just above said units.
16. A printing press including in combination a plurality of printing units arranged in a horizontally and longitudinally disposed series, a plurality of folders interposed symmetrically in said series, and an upper horizontally and longitudinally disposed series of printing units shorter than and superposed symmetrically with respect to said lower series of printing units and folders, a series of press units and folders disposed in sideby-side relation to said upper and lower series, and means for associatin webs perfected by the units in the two first mentioned series with webs perfected by units in the third-mentioned series and folding said associated webs on folders of said third series.
17. A printing press including in combination a plurality of printing units arranged in a horizontally and longitudinally disposed series, a plurality of folders interposed symmetrically in said series, an upper horizontally and longitudinally disposed series of printing units superposed symmetrically with respect to said lower series of printing units and folders, web-handling means located out of longitudinal alinement with said superposed series, and means for associating and directing webs perfected by printing units in said series to said web-handling means.
