The apron, of course, extends lengthwise over the wire some distance beyond the breast roll so as to deliver the Wet paperstock to the wire at the proper point.
For further controlling the depth of the flow of stock from the head box on to the wire, a regulating plate 26 is provided which is preferably pivotally mounted, as shown at 27, adjacent the lower edge of the ad justable gate 16. Suitable means including a clamping plate 28 and clamping mechanism 29 are provided for retaining the regulating plate in its pivotal mounting, and adjust-- ing rods-such as shown at 30 are connected to the regulating plate adjacent itsforward edge for effecting swinging movement of the plate about its pivot. It will be apparent that y raising or lowering the forward-edge portion of the regulating plate, the depth of the flow of stock from the head box on to the Wire will be effectively controlled.
The deckling device for controlling the width of the flow of paper stock between the regulating plate 26 and apron 23 is best shown in Figure 5, and consists of a back wall portion 35 and a side wall portion 36. The back wall portion is preferably formed of a channel-shaped member 37 and a plate 38 which is mounted on the back of the channel so asto be slidable thereon in such a way that it serves, when extended, to increase the width of the back wall portion 35. The plate 38 is so mounted by means of a guide 39 rigidly secured to the end of the back wall,40 of the channel member and provided with an undercut edge portion 41 which receives a complementary edge portion 42 of the plate 38. The other end of the plate 38 is slidably mounted by means of a track 43 integral with plate 38 and fitting over a track 44 projecting from the adjacent end of the back wall portion 40. The plate 38 is also provided with plunger members 45 and 46 secured thereto by means of lugs 47 and 48, and the said plungers are slidable through apertures 49 and 50, respectively, provided in the top wall 51 of the channel member. The plungers 45 and 46 are recessed, as clearly shown in Figure 6, to receive a coil spring and a spring guide pin 53 which is seated in the lower flange or wall 54 of the channel member. The plungers 45 and 46, which slide through the apertures 49 and 50 respectively,
are effective to prevent displacement of the plate 38 from the channel member, and the above described undercut seat arrangement 41 and 42 and track arrangement 43 and -llserve to steady the plate 38 relative to the channel member.
The side wall portion of the deckling dcvice includes a member 55 rigidly secured to the end of the channel member 35 by suitable means such as a screw shown at 56, the adjacent end ol' the channel member being provided with a closure portion 57 which is drilled and, tapped to receive the screw 56. The member 55 is preferably further connected to the channel member by means ol. a diagonal brace 58 which is secured by means of screws, as shown at 59 and 60, to the channel member and side member respectively. The member 55 is preferably wedge-shaped, as clearly shown, to fit between the apron 2;} and the regulating plate 26, which is usually disposed at an angle relative to the apron as shown. An extension member 61 is pivoted adjacent its upper corner, as shown at 62, to the adjacent upper corner of the rear wall extension plate 38. The said side extension 61 is further provided with guide lugs 63 and 64, which overhang the member 55 so as to position the extension member 61 closely adjacent the outer face of the member 55. and a spring member 66, secured as shown at 67 to the member 55 and engaging thelug 64,- is effective to normally tend to swing the outer end of the side extension 61 upwardly about the pivot 62, thereby to in- .crease the effective width of the wedge-shaped side. The springs 52 which operate in the recessed plunger posts 45 and 46 normally tend to force the back wall extension plate 38 outwardly to increase the effective width of the back wall. Hence it will be seen that the deckling device is automatically adjustable to accommodate itself to closely fit the depth of the space between the adjustable regulating plate 26 and apron 23. i
The above described deckling device is mounted between the regulating plate 26 and apron 23 so as to be slidable cross-wise of the length ofthe paper making machine in such a way that the extensible back wall portion ot'thedevice is effective when the device is adjusted inwardly to close the end portion of the discharge opening 12 in the head box and so that the extensible side wall portion of the device is effective to controlor guide the adjacent edge of the flow of stock between the regulating plate and apron. It
will be apparent that if the gate member 16 is adjusted so as to increase or decrease the height of the discharge opening 12, the deck ling device, because of its spring-actuated extensible back-Wall portion will be automatically adjusted to compensate for the adjustment of the gate 16. The spring-actuated extensibility of the side wall portion of the deckling device also results in automatic intense adjustment of: the side wall to accommodate itself to any adjustment of the forward edge portion of the regulating plate 26 which may be accomplished through the adjusting rods 30.
For facilitating adjustment of the deckling device crosswise of the machine, we provide an arm 68 integral with the brace 58', and this arm 68 may be provided with a hand grip for permitting convenient manual adjustment, or an arm may be provided with means for attaching the same to mechanism whereby such adjustment may be effected. In the present instance, we provide the arm 68 with an upstanding lug 69 which is adapted to be connected to mechanism which will herein after he described for effecting the said adjustment.
Any convenient mechanism may be provided for locking the deckling device in any desired position of adjustment between the regulating plate and apron, and in the present instance, we provide a clamping arm 70 which depends from a bracket T1 secured to the front wall 13 of the head box. A stud 72 secured in the front wall of the head. box beneath the bracket 71 extends through an aperture in the clamping arm and rotatably receives a cam member 73 provided with a handle T l whereby the cam member 78 may be rotated. A cam member is fixedly secured to the clamping arm 70 so that rotation of the cam member 73 forces the lower end of the arm 70 into engagement with the edge of the top wall 51 of the channel member, thereby to clamp the deckling device between the portion of the head box which it engages and the clamping arm.
The deckle strap guide pulley 21 is rotatably mounted on the inner end of ashaft 80 and is locked thereon against axial movement by means of collars 81 and 82 which are nonrotatably secured to the shaft. A. guide linger 81 integral with the collar 81 is provided for preventing the deckle strap from leaving the guide pulley adjacent the top of the latter, and a paper stock guide 81 issupported by means of a hanger 81 secured to the said collar 81. The guide 81 serves to guide the edge of the flow of stock across the space between the forward end of the deckling device and the adjacent portion of the deckle strap. lhe shaft 80 is axially slidably mounted in a bearing 83 forming one part of an arm 84: which is pivotally mounted on a vertical axis at its opposite end, as best shown in Figures 1 and 2. For the purpose of so mounting the arm 84, we provide a bracket 85 which is pivoted to the side wall of the head box 10 by means of a bolt'88 and. which is locked against pivotal movement about the bolt 80 by means of bolts 8'? and 88 which pass through slots89 and 90, respectively provided in the bracket member. The bracket member 85 is provided with spaced cars 91 and 92; between which a tongue portion 93 of the arm 84 is disposed and pivoted by means of a pivot bolt 94. The tongue portion 93 of the arm is provided with a slot 95through which a bolt 96 passes intothreaded engagement with the side wall of the head box.
It will be apparent that by loosening the bolts 87, 88 and 96, the arm 84; and bracket 85 may be swung in a vertical plane about the pivot bolt 86, and hence that a certain degree of vertical adjustment is provided for the deckle strap guide pulley 21 and the deckle strap 20'. It will also be apparent that by removing the bolt 96, the arm 84- may be swung in a horizontal plane about the pivot bolt 94, thereby permitting removal of the deckle strap guide pulley from its normal position over the wire 17, and thereby atfording free access to parts of the machine to which access is otherwise obstructed by the deckle strap guide pulley and its supporting arm.
The outer end of the shaft 80 is axially slidably mounted in a suitable bearing 99 provided as a part of the arm 8d. .Elr shaft 100 provided with screwthreading, as shown at 101, thrcadedly engages an apertured boss 102 also provided on the arm 84 intermediate the bearings 88 and 99, and the outer end of the shaft 100 is rotatably mounted in the connecting arm 98,.but locked against axial movement relative thereto by suitable means such as a collar 108 and a hand wheel 10%, both of which are rigidly secured to the shaft 100.
. lit will be readily understood that by turning the hand wheel 104 and shaft 100, the con necting arm 98 will be caused to move towards or from the supporting arm 84. Such movement-of the connecting arm 98 relative to the supporting arm is effective to move the shafts 80 and 97 axially through their respective bearings, such movement of the shaft 80 being efi'ective' to correspondingly adjust the deckle strap guide pulley crosswise of the length of the paper making machine. Hence it is a very simple matter to adjust the deckle strap inwardly or outwardly crosswise of the inachine'to control the width of the flow of stock as'it is deposited on the wire.-
For adjusting the deciding .device between the regulating plate and apron, we provide an arm 105 rigidly secured to the connecting arm 98 by means of bolts such as shown at 106, and to the lower end of which one lug 10.7 of
a lit-shaped bracket 108 is rigidly connected.v
The other lug 109 of the d-shaped bracket is connected by means of a bolt 110 to the In}; 89 of the arm 68. ll/loven'icnt of the connecting arm 98 will be transmitted through the arm 105 and bracket 108 to the deckling device, and hence rotation of the hand wheel 10 i is operative/to simultaneously adjust the deckle strap and the deciding device.
We are aware that changes may be made In the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which should be determined by reference to the following claims, which should be construed as broadly as possible consistent with the state of the art.
We claim as our invention:
1. In combination in a paper making machine, a deckle strap, a pulley for guiding said strap, an arm carrying said pulley, and means for vertically and horizontally adjustably mounting said arm on a relatively stationary portion of the machine, and means.
carried by said arm for effecting axial adjustment of said pulley inwardly orv outwardly of the machine.
2. In combination in a paper making machine, means for receiving a flow of wet paper stock, a deckle strap forguidingthe edge of said flow on said receiving means, a pulley for guiding said strap, an arm carrying said pulley, means for mounting said arm so as to permit movement of said arm and pulley away from their normal operative position relative to the wire, thereby permitting free access to be had to the wire.
3. In combination in a paper making machine, means for receiving a flow of wet paper stock, a deckle strap for guiding the edge of said flow on said receiving means, a pulley for guiding said strap, anarm carrying said pulley, means for pivotally mounting said arm so as to permit swinging of said arm and pulley away from their normal operative position relative to the wire, thereby permitting free access to be had to the wire..
4. In combination in a paper making machine, a wire for receiving a flow of wet paper stock, a deckle strap for guiding the edge of said flow of stock on the wire, a pulley for guiding said strap, an arm carrying said pulley, means for pivotally mounting said arm on a vertical axis so as to permit said arm and pulley to be swung horizontally away from their normal operative position access to be had to the wire.
5. In combination in apaper making machine, a deckle strap, a pulley for guiding said strap, means for mounting said pulley so as to permit adjustment thereof inwardly relative to the wire, thereby permitting free 0r outwardly of the machine, said means comprising a shaft carrying said pulley, a rela tively stationary arm mounted on a part of the machine and provided with means for axially slidably receiving said shaft, a second shaft having screw threaded engagement with said arm, means connecting'said pulley shaft and second shaft against axial movement relative to each other, and means for facllitatmg rotation of said second shaft for effecting- ,axial movement thereof relative to said arm and thereby to effect axial movement of said pulley shaft and pulley.
6. In combination in a paper making machine, a head box having a discharge opening, means for receiving a flow of paper stock from said head'box, an apron for conducting said stock from said discharge opening to said receiving means, a regulating plate overlying said apron for controlling the depth of the flow of stock thereover, and a deckling device -fitting between said'apron and regulating plate and slidably adjust-able therebetween for controlling the width of the flow of stock.
7. In combination in a paper making machine, a head box having a discharge opening, means for receiving a flow of paper stock from said head box, an apron for conducting said stock from said discharge opening to said receiving means, a regulating plate overlying said apron for controlling the depth of flow of stock thereover, a deckling device fitting between said apron and regulating plate and slidably adjustable therebetween for controlling the width of the flow of stock, and means for effecting adjustment .of said deckling device.
8. In combination in a paper making machine, a head box having a discharge opening, means for receiving a flow of paper stock from said head box. an apron for conducting said stock from said discharge opening to said receiving means, a regulating -plate overlying said apron for controlling the depth of flow of stock thereover, a deckling device fitting between said apron and regulating plate and slidably' adjustable therebetween for controlling the width of the flow of stock, and means for locking said deekling device in the desired position of adjustment.
9. In combination in a paper making machine, a head box having a discharge opening, an apron extending outwardly from the lower edge of said opening, means adjacent the outer end of said apron for receiving a flow of paper stock from said head box, a regulating plate overlying said apron and vertically adjustable for controlling the depth of the flow of stock over said apron, and a deckling device fitting between said apron and regulating plate and slidably adjustable therebetween for controlling the width of the flow of stock, said deckling device being adjustable in a vertical direction to fit the space between said apron and vertically adjustable regulating plate.
10. In combination in a paper making machine, a head box having a discharge opening, an apron extending outwardy from the lower edge of said opening, means adjacent the outer end of said apron for receiving the paper stock flowing over the apron from said head box, a regulating plate overlying said apron for controlling the depth of the flow of stock over said apron, and a deckling device fitting between said apron and regulating plate, slidably adjustable therebetween, for controlling the width of the flow of stock, said deckling device including a back wall fitting between. the apron and regulating plate andcengaging a portion of the flow box Gangstas box having a dischar v apron,
adjacent one end of the discharge opening, thereby serving to close a portion of said opening, and a side wall portion extending lengthwise of the machine-from the inner end of said back wall portion and fitting between said apron and regulating plate, thereby toserve as a-guide for one edge of the How oiiiistock.

12. In combination in apaper making machine, a head box having a discharge opening, an apron extending outwardly from the lower edge ct said openin means for receiving the paper stock which ows from said head box and over said apron, a regulating plate pivotally mounted on a horizontal axis adjacent the upper edge of said dischargeopenin'g, means for swinging said regulating plate on its pivot tor ad usting the depth of the flow of stock between said apron and the plate, a deckling device between said apron and regulating plate including a spring actuated, vertically extensible wall portion, automatically edective to maintain itself 'so extended that it closelytits thespace between said regulating plategand apron tor guiding one edge ot the dew or stock in said space. In a paper-making machine, the combination of a head b'ox having a discharge opening, a wire for receiving a flow of paper stock from said head box, an apron for conducting stock from said discharge opening to said wire, a vertically adjustable regulating plate overl in said apron for controlling the depth of t e ow of stock thereover, and a deckling device for SSODtXOlliDg the width of said flow between said apron and regulating plate, said device being self adjusting to fit the vertical space between said apron and regulating plate, and means for mounting said deckling device so as to permit adjustment thereof crosswise of said apron between said apron and re ulatin plate.
