IMPROVEMENT IN SULKY-PLOWS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167 A74, dated September 7, 11-375; application filed June 19, 1875.

To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, ELI W. RUSSELL, of Ashley, in the county of Pike and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Riding-Plow, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved riding-plow, which shall be so constructed that the riding attachment will not interfere with the proper working of the plow, which will enable the plow to be withdrawn from beneath the soil and raised from the ground at the same time, and by the same operation, and which shall be simple in construction and convenient in use.

The invention consists in the combination of the adjustable beam, the pivoted curved bars, the rigid arm, and the pivoted lever with the frame and the plow.

A is a rectangular frame, to which is attached the tongue B, by which the plow is guided. O is the wheel that runs in the furrow, and which is pivoted to the lower end of the standard D. The standard D extends up across a side bar of. the frame A, and has a slot or a number of holes formed in it to receive the bolt or bolts by which it is secured to the frame A, so that it may be easily adjusted to cause the plow to run deeper or shallower in the ground, as may be desired.

The standard D may be bolted to the frame A, or to a flanged casting attached to said frame. The latter construction is preferred, as holding the standard more firmly.

The wheel 0 D is placed in advance of the plow, so as to be out of the way of the furrow-slice when being turned, and is attached to the right-hand side of the frame A when a right-hand plow is to be used, and to the lefthand side of said frame when aleft-hand plow is to be used.

E is the wheel that runs upon the unplowed land, and which is placed upon the side of the frame A opposite the wheel G D, and in the rear of the plow, so as to properly balance the machine. The standard F is attached to the frame A in the same manner as the standard D, and is made in two parts, swiveled to each other, so that the wheel may operate as a caster-wheel, and enable the machine to be easily turned in any direction to plow around acorner or curve, or for other purposes. To the front and rear bars of the frame A are attached one or more beams, G,

according as one ormore plows are to be used. v

The beams G are adjustable, so that they may be moved laterally as wider or narrower plows are to be used.

H is the plow, and I is the plow-beam, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. To the opposite sides of the forward part of the plow-beam I are pivoted two bent or U-shaped bars, J. The forward arms of the bent bars J are the shorter, and are pivoted at their ends to an arm or bracket attached to the forward part of the beam G. The rear and longer arms of the bent bars J pass up upon the opposite sides of the middle part of the beam G, and are connected by a bolt or pin, which, when the plow H is at work in the ground, rests upon the upper side of the said beam G, and which, when the plow H is raised from the ground, rises above the said beam G. To the rear part or bend or the plow-beam I is rigidly attached a rearwardly-projecting arm, K, to the outer end of which is pivotedthe lower end of a lever, L. The lever L is pivoted to a bracket attached to the rear part of the beam G or frame A, and its upper end projects into such a position that it may be readily reached and operated by the plowman with his foot while sitting upon his seat.

By this construction, by pressing the upper end of the lever L downward the plow H I will be swung to the rearward to withdraw it from the ground, and at the same time, and by the same movement, it will be raised from the ground.

The upper end of the lever L, when lowered, is caught and held by a spring-catch, M, at tached to the forward part of the frame A, so as to support the plow above the ground for any required length of time, for convenience in passing to and from the field and from place to place.
