Application led Hatch 21,' 192'?. Serial No. 176,912.
This invention relates to oil pumping systems, and an object of the invention is to provide means for cooling the oil as it comes from the cracking stills, so as4 to permit the I5y handling of the oil by a centrifugal pump of approved construction, which system also provides for the re-heating of the oil after it leaves the centrifugal pump.
. In oil .distillation systems, theoil leaves the stills at a high temperature, and extreme diiiiculty is experienced in the proper handling of this hot oil by pumps since the temperature of the oil tends to damage its parts and otherwise aiects the operation of the '15 pump unfavorably.v i However, it is desirable to-return the oil to the still with as little loss of temperature as possible, 'in an inexpensive. economical manner. The present inven'tion comprises the provision of a heat exchanger interposed in the line from the still to the pump throughwwhich heat exchanger the oil passes on'its way to the pump, and the oil' discharged from the pump also passes through the heat exchanger on its way back to the still, thereby conserving the heat of the hot oil except the relatively low percentage lost bv radiation and pro' tecting the pump so that standard .designs of pumps may be used. The present system also embodies a cooler interposed in the connection between the heat interchanger and the pump for cooling the oil to protect the pump. when conservation of all the oil heat is not so important and a smaller heat exchanger is used or to meet'other special conditions. This cooler is preferably arranged on a by-pass and mav be located any place between the still and the pump.' With these objects in view, the invention 49 consists in various features of construction and combination of parts, which will be first described in connection with the accompanying .drawing which shows an oil pumping system of the preferred form,'showing parts of the mechanism employed in the sysp tem in elevation and parts in section` and features forming the invention will be spei cifically pointed out in the claims.
Referring more particularly to the .draw- 50 ing, the hot oil from the cracking still, passes through the pipe 1 into the heat in-v ,terchanger 2. The hotv oil from the still passes through the tubes 3 of the interchanger 2 and out of the outlet end 4 through a suitable pipe connection 5 into the pump direct by way of the pipe 5 or to the pump through a cooler 6 and connections 14 and 11. The cooler 6 may be of en a proved type of cooler, preferably o tllie water or oil cooled type and it'may have the usual type of circulating water or oil inlet and outlet, as shown at 7 and 8. If the heat exchanger 2 has insufficient surface to restore the oil to its original temperature less radiation loss, it will be cooled in the cooler 6 so that it will enter the pump 9 at a safe temperature. The oil discharged from the pump 9 to the still line 10 through the heat interchanger 2 flows outside the tubes 3 so that the relatively cold oil discharged from the pump 9will pick up or absorb heat from the hot oil passing through the tubes 3 of the heat interchanger and will raise the temperature of the cold .oil and lower the temperature of the'hotter incoming oil, thereby delivering the oil to the pipe line 10 at aption or arrangement of parts shown but that these may be modified widely within the invention defined by the claims.
Whatis claimed is: .c 1. In an oil pumping system, the combination with a pump, of means connected between the source of oil supply to the pump and the final discharge of the pump for re-v ducing temperature of oil fiowing to the ump and raising temperature of oil discharged by the pump. A
2. In an oil pumping system, a pump, a heat interchanger connected to the` pump for 'permitting a heat transfer Ybetween o1 entering the pump suction and o il discharged by the pump whereby the oil leaving the interchanger from the pump discharge will be heated by the oil passing through the interchanger to the pump suction.
Q i 51,644,841 Y 3. In an oil pumping system, a pump, a the pump suction, a heat interchanger conheat interchanger connected to the pump for nected to Ithe pump to receive for assagle permitting a' heat transfer between oil entherethrough the Ioil discharged y t e 15 y tering the pump suction and oil discharged pump, said heat interchanger connected be- `5 by the pum whereby the oil leaving the intween the cooler and the oil supply whereby terchanger rom the pump discharge will be oil flowing to the cooler will pass through heated by the oil passing through the interthe nterchanger to permit transfer of heat changer to the pump suction, and a cooler from the oil flowing to the cooler to the oil 20 interposed betweenI the heat interchanger flowing from the pump. l0 and the pump suction. In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
4. In an oil pumping system, a pump, a.
cooler for cooling oil prior to its entrance to JAMES A. LUPFER.
