COMBINED NUT AND Bor/r LOCK.
Apenction ined october 1c, 1924. i serial No. 744,085.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. BRUM- nmm), a citizen of the United States, residing at Danville, in the county of Pittsylvania and State of /Tirginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Nut and Bolt Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to a combined nut and bolt loclr and has for its prime object to provide a device ofthis naturev which is capable of easy manipulation for assembling the various parts and which will be most efhcient inV preventing said parts from becoming accidentally disassembled orV unlocked.
Another very important object of the -invention is to provide a device of this nature possessing a very simple and effective construction, one which is thoroughly reliable, extremely economical to manufacture, strong, durable, and otherwise well adapted tothe purpose for which it is designed. y
lVith the above and numerous other `objects in view as will appear as the descrip-v Vthe combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing :V
Figure l is an end elevation of an assemblage embodying the features of this invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse section therethrough taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is a somewhat similar section to that shown in Figure 2 but at right angles thereto,
Figurell is a plan view of the nut,
Figure 5 is a section therethrough taken on the line 5 5 of Figure fi,
Figure 6 is a. perspective view of the lock washer, f
Figure 7 is a view showing in detail the construction of the ends of prongs used in conjunction with the device, and
Figure 8 is a detail perspective of the lock sleeve. Y
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that numerals l and 2 represent two members which it is desired to hold together by means of a bolt. The bolt is shown at B and embodies the ordinary conventional con-- struction. The nut N is provided with the usual interior threaded portion besides'having a pair of diametrically opposed grooves 2S extending across the threaded interior, A lock sleeve'S is formed with an elongated cylindrical body 4 having prongs 5 extend-y y ing from onejend and at its other end provided with notches 6. The prongs 5 are provided with beveled ends and are diametrically opposed toI each other. The notches 6 ,are also diametrically opposed to eachother This lockone alining with each prong 5. ing sleeve is assembled with the nut by inserting the. prongs into the'grooves 3, the beveled ends 7 allowing this to "be easily done. The lockingy sleeveis then projected tlirougli'openings provided in the members l and 2. I
A lock washer ,Vwliich is shown to advantage in Figure 6 is formed with a plurality of bendableears Qextending froirrfitsV outer periphery and a pair of prongs 10 with beveledends ll extending from the edge of the opening 12 which is' centrally located. 80'
These prongs l0 extend at right angles rfrom the body of the washer W and the beveled notches 6 of the locking sleeve S when the bolt is inserted in this sleeve. As the bolt is inserted in the sleeve and the threaded portion thereof comes into contact with the threads of the nut, the bolt isl turned so as to threadedly engage the nut until'the members l and 2 are brought tightly together as may be desired.y One of the ears 9 is then bent up alongside of the head of the bolt B as is indicated to advantage in Figures l and 2. It will thus be seen that both bolt andnut areI locked in engagement with the i lock sleeve S and it will be impossible to reordinary bolt7 nut, and bushing.
`ends 1l are similar in construction .to the kbeveled ends 7 of prongs 5. This washer Vif is placed over the bolt B adjacent the head thereof and the prongs l0 extend 'into theV It will be apparent from the above that I have devised a novel construction oit this nature which may be easily and quickly assembled and disassembled, which Will be cheaply manufactured and Will be durable and effective under all conditions and which is not liable to get out or order.
The embodiment of the invention which l have described in detail possesses all the features ot advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and While l have in the present instance shown and described a` preferred embodiment of the invention which Will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of numerous changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit or scope et the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. A combination with a bolt and nut, a bushing received on the bolt, means between one end of the bushing and nut ltor holding the latter against rotation, a bendable Washer associated With the bolt adjacent the head thereof and adapted to be bent against the latter to hold the bolt against rotation, and elements carried by the Washer having interlocking engagement with the bushing to loclr the latter and the washer together.
'2. A device of the class describe-d including in combination a lock sleeve provided With notches at one end, a bolt insertable through the sleeve, a Washer on the bolt having a bendable ear to engage the head of the bolt andk provided with prongs adapted to tit in the notches of the sleeve, a nut threaded on the bolt and means for locking the nut to the sleeve.
3. A device or' the class described including in combination a lock sleeve forming a bushing and provided at one end with a notch and at its other end with a prong, a bolt in the sleeve, a Washer on the bolt embodying means for locking the same to the bolt and provided With a prong insertable in the notch, a nut threaded on the bolt and provided With an interior groove for receiving the. prong extending from the sleeve.
4. A device or the class described including in combination a lock sleeve forming a bushing and provided at one end with a notch and at its other end with a prong, a bolt in the sleeve, a Washer on the bolt embodying means 'for locking the same to the bolt and providedivith av prong insertable in the notch, a nut threaded on the bolt and provided with an interior groove for receiving the prong extending from the sleeve, said prongs being provided with beveled ends.
5. A device ol the class described including in combination a lock sleeve provided at one end with a pair of notches and at its other end with a pair oit prongs having beveled ends, a bolt extending into the sleeve, a Washer on the bolt provided With bendable ears on its outer edge for engagement with the head of the bolt and at its inner edge with a pair of prongs extending at right angles 'to the Washer and insertable in the notches ot the sleeve, said prongs being provided With beveled ends, and a nut threaded on the bolt and provided With a pair of grooves 'for receiving the prongs extending from the sleeve.
In testimony whereof 'l aiiix my signature.
