Description

I D. FRANCIS.
' Combined Desks, Seats, and Tables.
N0.155,23l. Patented Sept.2 2,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
-DAVID FRANCIS, OF BIBKENHEAD, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DESKS, SEATS, AND TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,231, dated September 22, 1874; application filed February 2, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID FRANCIS, of Birkenhead, in the county of Chester, England, have invented a new and Improved Coinbined Desk, Seat. and Table; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation representing my invention of the table. Fig. 2 is a portion of a side elevation, partly broken out, and showing my invention as a desk. Fig. 3 is also a portion of a side elevation, representing the back of a seat.
The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A denotes the knuckle formed by the bar inserted in the upright portion of back; B, movable top hinged to knuckle; 0, plates or brackets secured to movable top D, the ratchet; E, the tongue, and F the bolt running through knuckle A. G is the seat, secured by bolts and nuts H, and I stays fixed to under side of seat, and secured to standard by bolt and nut K, and to seat by bolt and nut L. M M are upper portions ofstandard caught by the ratchet D.
In constructing this article of furniture to serve several uses, the standards are made of wrought-iron, welded and riveted together. A bar of extra strength is inserted in the upright portion of the back, to give greater strength, and to form a knuckle, to which a movable top is hinged. The movable top is furnished with plates or brackets formed in l -iron, with ratchet and tongue, the latter riveted and not welded on. Plates are secured to the top by four strong iron screws, and to the standards by a bolt running through the said knuckle, a longitudinal slot being provided at the end of tongue. The bolt has a head at one end, and is secured at the other by means of a split pin, with ends turned round the bolt. By means of the longitudinal slot at the end of the tongue the top can be moved to any angle, and secured in position by means of the teeth and ratchet.
The seat is secured to each standard by No. 2 fiat round-headed boltsand nuts. To make the desk and seat more rigid, and freer from rocking, stays are fixed to the under side of the seat, and secured to the standard by bolt and nut, and to the seat by bolt and nut and strong iron screws.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of piece having knuckle A, the hinged'top B, having subjacent plates (J D E, and the seat-frame having back, with angle part M M, all arranged as described, to admit of adjust-ability in the top B, as set forth.
The above specification signed by me this 5th day of June, A. D. 1873.
DAVID FRANCIS. Witnesses:
