Description

Jim 16, 1925.
P. W. FENTON mucz sxnmflme DEVICE Filed May 1925 ATTORNEY Patented June 16, 1925.
UNITED STATES 'P PAUL W. FENTON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PRIGE-EXIIIBITING DEVICE.
Application filed May 7, 1925. Serial No. 28,541.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, PAUL FENTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Price-Exhibiting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to changeable signs designed, for example, as price indicating means, such as may be utilized in exhibiting the price of gasoline at a filling station.
It has for its objectto provide a substantial though cheaply manufactured device of this character which shall be compact and afford ample variation in the particular indicia employed, for example, over the prevailing range of prices. A further object of the invention consists in providing means whereby a particular indicator member may be quickly and readily selected or changed.
The nature of the invention, however, will best be understoodwhen described in conncctionwith the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is afront elevation of the improved exhibiting device shown suspended from a suitable bracket.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the said device with the forward cover plate removed.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line 3-3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings, the novel device comprises a suitable casing or housing composed of a front member and a back member 11 having corresponding flanged edges designed to fit one within the other to provide a casing or housing for display members hereinafter described. These housing members are provided, furthermore, with registering windows or sight openings 12 and 13 cuttherein; and the members are preferably of sheet metal but may be of other material sufficiently durable to withstand the wear to which the exhibiting device is to be subjected.
Upon either side of the windows 12 and 13 and within the housing is pivotally mounted a set of plates l4 and 15 which bear the figures or other indicating marks which it isdesired to display thru the said windows, both faces of a plate being provided with similar marks and the two sets of plates upon opposite sides of the Window providsenting a price or the like It will be understood, of course, that but ing, for example, consecutive numbers reprea sin le set of slates ma i be em lo ed but b l .l
These rivets areextended plates thereto in symmetrical position upon opposite sides of the median line of the windows and to provide, also, pivot pins or studs upon which the said plates may be swung to bring the same in exhibiting position before the windows. that one plate only from a particular side is to remain in horizontal position to register with the windows, the plates of each set being marked to correspond to the range figures required. Moreover, all of the plates except those in use will normally be concealed within the housing and be retained in a substantially vertical position thru the action of gravity in view ofthe pivoting of such plates at the lower corner near the edge adjacent the window. Suitable legends and other information may, of course, bealso displayed in connection therewith upon the outer faces of the housing, as indicated, being embossed thereon or cut therein or otherwise applied.
To exhibit the desired slide or plate, it is necessary to swing an entire set across the window and then return the individual plates manually with the exception of the particular one selected. In accordance with the invention, provision is made for conveniently upsetting or swinging all of the It will be understood plates of a set, as contained by its U-shaped members, simultaneously into horizontal position before the windows. This is effected by push rods 20 or like members projecting outwardly from the bottom of the housing and preferably mounted in a block 21- at the lower portion of the housing be tween its walls and which may serve as a bearing for said rods and a stop for the plates when horizontally disposed and may be of wood or' other inexpensive material. The inner end of a push rod is turned over for this purpose and to prevent withdrawal of the push rod from the housing, said end aifording thus a substantial contact surface with the bottom of a U-shaped member 16 or 17. The push rods are offset some distance from the corresponding pivot studs 18 or 19 of a set of plates so as to aiford ample leverage in the swinging of such set, this being accomplished by pressing upwardly on the outer head 22 of the corresponding push rod. In this manner, the battery of plates is rendered conveniently available and from which the desired one is selected thru a window as hereinbefore set forth.
As the exhibitor device may in many instances be employed in positions where it is subject to the elements, it is desirable to provide a: drain opening 23 thru the block 20 in addition to such openings as may be about the push rods. Suitable attaching means 24, also, are provided at the upper portion of the device whereby the same may be secured to a convenient bracket or like member, as indicated in Fig. 1.
I claim 1. A price exhibitor comprising a housing and marked plates mounted therein, and the said housing being provided with a window, and means to simultaneously move all the plates into position before the window to permit of selecting a desired plate therefrom to remain in exhibiting position.
2. A price exhibitor comprising a housing and two sets of marked plates mounted therein at opposite sides, and the said housing being provided with an intermediate window, and means to simultaneously move all of the plates of a particular set into position before the window to permit of selecting a desired plate therefrom to remain in exhibiting position.
3. A price exhibitor comprising a housing and two sets of marked plates mounted therein at opposite sides, and the said housing being provided with an intermediate window, a U-shaped holding member for each set of the plates, means to pivot said members with plates to the housing, and push rods extending beyond the housing and having their inner ends in proximity to the U-shaped members and adapted to engage the same for upsetting a set of plates.
4. A price exhibitor comprising a housing and two sets of marked .plates mounted therein at opposite sides, and the said housing being provided with an intermediate window, a Ushaped holding member for each set of plates, means to pivot said member with plates to the housing at the lower corner near the adjacent edge of the window, and push rods extending beyond the housing and having. their inner ends adapted to engage the U-shaped member at point removed from the pivot studs for upsetting a set of plates.
5. A price exhibitor comprising a housing and two sets of marked plates mounted therein at opposite sides, and the said housing being provided with an intermediate window, a U-shaped holding member for each set of the-plates,.1neans to pivot said members with plates to the housing, a block of material held between the walls of the housing at its lower portion acting as a stop for the plates when swung into position before the window, and push rods fitting to said blocks, extending beyond the housing and have their inner ends in proximity to the U-shaped members and adapted to engage the same for upsettlng a set of plates.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
PAUL V. FENTON.
