Patented Dec. 30, 1924.
UNITED STATES 1.521.369 PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. HAMEBSLEY. OF YORK, Y., ASSIGNOR T THE HAMERSLEY MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION 0F NEW' JERSEY.
PACKAGE.
Application led April 20, 1922. Serial No. 555,764.
To lall zhom z't may concern:
Bc it known that I, GEORGE W. HAMER- sLEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, county andl State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packages, of which the following. is a specification.
My invention relates to the supplying of waxed paper and similar materials in such form or packages that contamination of the pa er is prevented.
ne of the objects of my invention is the provision of aA convenient, sanitary and inexpensive package whereby the paper may be economically used b withdrawing only such a quantity as is esired at any one time.
Another object of my invention is to mount the roll of pa er in such a manner that a new roll can e readily substituted when necessar A further object of my invention is the provision in a unitary structure of a support and a cutter for the paper.
A further object is the provision of a convenient com act package wherein the roll of paper may convemently supported and held against deformation and bodily movement during the cutting operation thereby insuring a good clean cutting operation at all times.
Further objects of my invention willbe manifest from the following description of the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a side view partly in section of an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the apparatus of Fig. 1 showing the cover removed and a portion of the paper withdrawn and partly torn or cut off.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a similar view showing 'part of the paper withdrawn to a position where it may be torn or cut, and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the end-walls of the support for the paper.
lReferring to the drawings in detail 1 designates a receptacle of any inexpensive material such as cardboard comprising a top 2, rectangular side walls 3 and 4, and rectangular end-walls 5 and 6. W1thin this receptacle is a sup rt 7 the end members 8 and 9 of which conform to the end walls is a cutter 14 for cutting the material 13.
The support and cutter are preferably of thin sheet metal so that the same may easily be bent or iexed for the removal of the core of the used roll and for the insertion of a new roll.
The support 7 has a bent under flange 15 for stiffening the sup-port and also the cutter.
Because of the flexibility of the support and cutter the walls of the receptacle 1 are relatively rigid such as strong card board or the like and inasmuch as the end walls of the support are made to conform to the end walls of the receptacle the support v co-operates with the ends and sides of the receptacle or box to prevent relative movementl of the support and receptacle. The back of the receptacle also functions as a brace for the cutter during the cutting or tearing operation.
When it is desired to remove some paper the cover of the receptacle is removed and the free end of the paper is withdrawn until a suiiicient length is removed, then the roll is held against rotation by thev other hand and the piece of paper cut or torn oif the member 14 functioning as a cutter or shear.
What I claim is y 1. A package comprising a box, a removable support in said box, bearings on said support for a roll of material, and a cutter on said support for cutting said material.
2. A package comprising a box having a body and a cover therefor, a support for a roll of material, said support fitting within said box, and the ends of the support cooperating with the ends and sides of the box to prevent relative movement between the support and the box, a cutter extending from one end to the other of said support, one side wall of said box functioning as a 105 brace for said cutter during the cutting operation.
3. A package comprising a box having rectangular side and' end walls, a support, within the box having rectangular end 110 members, a iexible cutter joining the yend members of said support to each other, the rectangular end and side walls of the box cooperating with the rectangular end members of said support to prevent relative movement betweensthe support and box durin the cutting operation.
4. package com rising a box having rectangularends and) sides, a cover for the box,a support within .the box, said support comprising rectangular. end members shaped to conform to the ends of the box, a. cutter connecting 'the ends of said support to each other, a bearing member on each end member of said support, and a roll of material on said bea-rings, said cutter being composed of flexible material to permit -the end members of said support to be spread apart upon remogval of thev support from said box to of replacement of the said roll of material, the ends and sides of said box co-operating with the end members of the support when the support is within the box to prevent spreading of the end members of the support and release of said roll of material.
5. A package comprising a box having side members and substantially rigid end members, a support within the box, said support comprising spaced end members coopera-ting with the ends of the box and prevented thereby from turning relativel thereto, a cutter connecting the end mem rs of the support to each other and located adjacent t e upper end vof the end members of the support, a bearing member on each end member of said support and a roll of material supported by said bearings, said end members being composed of iexible material to permit them to be spread apart upon the removal of the support from said box to permit of the insertion of a new roll of material.
This specification signed the 10th day of April A. D. 1922.
GEORGE W. HAMERSLEY.
