FLOUR BOX,
Application led January 18, 1923. Serial No. 613,553.
To all 107mm t may concern.'
Be it known that l, HENRY E. JANns, a citizen of the United States, residing in Pelham Manor, in the county of `Westchester, in the State of `New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Flour Boxes, of which the following is a speciication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. Y
This invention relates particularly to boxes for flour such as are commonly used in kitchen cabinets. Such a box, open at the top for the reception of flour, is usually provided at its lower end with a sliding or gate valve and with a discharge member such as a flour sifter which is detachable so that the housewife may remove the quantity of fiour in the sifter and discharge the iiour at some convenient place, the valve being closed and remaining with the box, which is supported upon an apertured shelf or otherwise so that the discharge member or sifter can be used on the box ifso desired or removed. In such a box the valve usually slides in ways formed therefor on the bottom of the box' and in the use of the box the ways generally become filled with flour, sometimes to such an extent that the valve cannot be operated freely or at all, while the iour which remains in the ways and cannot be removed readily, often spoils, so that for sanitary reasons such a construction is not approved. The object of this invention is to provide an improved construction such that not only may the discharge member be removed when desired, as before, but the valve itself may be removed also when the box is empty, so as to permit of thorough cleaning, and the liability4 to clogging of the ways be removed. In accordance with the invention the valve is carried by an intermediate part which is itself removable from the box and to which the discharge member is detachably connected. The invention will be explained more fully hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings in which it is il lustrated and in which- Figure l is a partial view in vertical section of a iour box equipped with the present improvement, the detachable sifter being shown in elevation.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure l, the plane of section being at right angles to that of Figure l and the sifter being removed.
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section on the plane indicated by the broken line 3-3 of Figure 2. v
The iiour box or container a may be of any suitable shape and constructed of any suitable material. lt is shown in the drawing as if constructed of metal and as having a conical lower end a, with a central apex-turca2 for the discharge ofthe flour, the
vso
aperture being surrounded by a straight annular flange a3. There is also secured to the box, preferably to the conical portion a', a second annular flange a4 to which may be secured detachably, as by a bayonet joint a5,
- an intermediate annular member which has at its top an annular portion or flange' to lit upon the annular'flange a4, a central discharge opening 62, surrounded by an annular flange b3 at the bottom, anda substantially flat, annular floor bt which is stamped'or otherwise formed as at b5 so as to provide an open guideway for the sliding or struction, is detachably engaged with the flange b3 by any suitable device, such as a clip d', so that it canpbe removed readily as occasion may require.
When the parts are assembled, as shown in Figure 1, the valve c may be drawn out partway so as to permit a quantity of flour to pass from the'box a into the discharge member, which may then be operated so as to discharge the sifted flour into a receptacle below it or, the valve having been closed, the sifter may be removed from the intermediate member b and the sifting operation performed elsewhere. When the box a is empty the intermediate member b may be detached and removed, permitting the valve ways to be thoroughly cleaned of fiour. It will be observed, moreover, that as the valve moves in free sliding contact with the lower edge of the iange as, the valve is practically cleaned of iour every time it is withdrawn and very little flour can at any time get into the valve ways b5. It is therefore possible to keep all parts of the our box at all times in sanitary condition and the movement of the valve is at all times free. At the vsaine time the discharge member can be used in place or removed as conditions may require, the discharge of flour from the box being controlled as usual by the valve.
Various changes in details of construction and arrangement can be made to suit diierent conditions of use or the convenience or preference of the manufacturer `and the invention, therefore, is not restricted to the particular construction shown and described except as pointed out in the claims.
claim as my invention:
vl. The combination of a container having a discharge opening in its bottom having a lower edge adapted. for contact with the upper face of a flat valve, a valve carrying member detachably secured to the container, having a discharge opening therethrough in line with the discharge opening of the container and having a flat floorsurrounding and of greater area than the discharge opening of the container', said Viiat oor being provided about the discharge opening with upwardly openways for ya Hat valve, and a flat valve movable in said Ways to open and close the discharge opening having its upper face in contact with the lower edge of the discharge opening of the container.
2. The combination of a container having a discharge opening in its`bottom having a lower edge adapted for contact with the upper face of a flat valve, a valve carrying member detachably secured to the container, having a discharge opening in line with the discharge opening of the container and having a flat floor surrounding and of greater area than the discharge opening 0.1":
the container, said flat Hoor being provided member detachably secured to the container, having a discharge opening therethrough in line with the discharge opening of the lcontainer and having a flat floor surrounding and of greater area than the discharge opening ofthe container, said fiat ioor being provided about the discharge opening with an upwardly open depression adapted to receive and form ways for a flat sliding-valve, and a fiat sliding valve movable in said Ways to open and close the discharge opening, having its upper face in contact lwith the lower edge of the flange of the discharge opening of the container, thevalve carrying member beingprovided with an opening for the sliding valve.
