Our invention is an improvement on the type 'ofstructure described in patentto Kralund, 1,299,738, granted April 8, 1919. Bearings 34 extend transversely from brackets 33 on each side of the same, and cranks 18 are rotatably mounted in these bearings. Each member 18 comprises a horizontal part 18 which extends through bearings 34 and a crank arm portion 18 which extends at an angle to the horizontal portion 18; The inner end of each crank arm 18 is provided with a horizontal extension 18 of reduced diameter which serves as a crank pin over which the boss 17 of one of the carrier devices engages.
The outer end of each member 18 extends through a cross head 35 with which member 18 is arranged to move longitudinally, member 18 being, however, rotatable with respect thereto. Each crosshead 35 is held in position by screws 36 which extend into one of the brackets or extensions 33. The position of each cross head 35, transversely of the apparatus, may be adjusted by means of nuts 37, 37 on the inner and outer sides of desired. 1
names? the cross head 35, so that crank arms 18 will be adjusted transversely of the apparatus. Accordingly, the carrier devices may be adjusted at both the forwardand rear ends ofthe same, transversely of the apparatus, longitudinally of the same and vertically by the various adjusting means described.
The mouths of the carrier devices are adapted as stated to deliver their charges into gate openings which may be provided in a gate member 38. The latter may be provided with a pair of openings, or with a plurality of openings equal to the number of carrier devices employed, these openings being indicated at 39 in the drawings. Bushings 40 are mounted in openings 39, these bushings having bores through which the charges of molten metal are delivered by the carrier devices.
The apparatus may be used in connection with a suitable die, a two part die being shown in the drawings, having parts 41 and 42. Die member 41 is suitably secured to the gate member 38, so that the gate openings in die member 41 will align with the bores of bushings 40 in the gate member. Die member 42 is moved longitudinally of the apparatus into contact with die member 41 and away from the same in opening and closing the die.
It is advisable that the gate openings in member 38 should be adjustable vertically and transversely of the apparatus with respert to the fixed frame member 3, so that different conditions of operation in producing different sizes and variety of die castings, may be complied with.
In the form of our invention shown in the drawings, gate member 38 is provided with slots 43 extending horizontally therethrough, these slots being elongated vertically. Bolts 44 extend through these slots and into the brackets or vertical extensions 33 of frame member 3. Gate member 38 may be. adjusted to a desired vertical posi tion, because of the relative movement of bolts 44 in slots 43, whereupon the bolts may be tightened to secure the gate member to the frame member 3 in the desired position.
The gate member 38 is preferably provided with vertical adjusting screws 45 which extend downwardlythrough rear-.
Ward extensions 46 of the gate member into engagement with upper horizontal surfaces 47 formed at the forward endsof frame extensions 33. These screws 45 are properly set to bear against the fixed surfaces 47 when the gate member has been adjusted into proper vertical position.
Crank arms -18 may be provided at their outer ends with levers 48 for swinging the same independently whenever this may be The apparatus for opening and closing the die may be of the/general character of that described in Patent 1,300,? 39, Kralund, Duckworth and Stern, dated April 15, 1919. As stated, the die member 41 is removably secured to the gate member 38 in any suitable inann'er to cause registration between the openings through bushings 40 and the gate openings of die member 41. In the construction shown, the bushings 40 have rectangular outer surfaces and are mounted in rectangular openings 39 in member 38, these openings being of greater lengths in a horizontal plane than the bushings. Accordingly, the bushings may be adjusted horizontally towards or away from each other, in accordance with the distance between the gate openings in any die which will be used therewith. The bushings 40 may beheld in adjusted position within openings 39 by the tightness of the fit of the upper and lower surfaces of the same within the openings, and by the coaction of the forward ends of the bushings with the gate openings in the die, the bushings preferably being provided with shoulder portions 49 at their forward ends which extend into corresponding recesses in the'die member. The die is preferably closed by a mechanism such as that shown in the drawings, in which a power cylinder 50 is provided, this having a piston 51 therein provided with a rod extending rearwardly, that is. toward the melting pot 1, through a' suitable gland. The piston or plunger 51 is reciprocated when desired by air or other suitable motive fluid which may be admitted to the cylinder on opposite sides of the plunger by means O'f'pipe connections 53 and 54.
The member 42 of the die which is adapted to be moved into and out of engagement with the member 411 of the die when the die is to be opened or closed is suitably secured to the face of a ram or horizontally movable member 55 which is preferably coaxial with cylinder 50.
Cylinder 50 is carried by a frame 56 having rearwardly extending upper and lower arms 57. Links 58 are pivotally connected to arms 57 to extend rearwardly therefrom.
Links 59 are pivotally connected to ram 55 to extend forwardly therefromg'links 58 and 59 being pivotally connected together on pins 60 to form toggles. The rear end of piston rod 52 is pivotally-connected to a block 61 which is connected by links 62, 62 to the pins 60. Accordingly, the rearward movement of plunger 51 into the position shown in the drawings serves to straighten out the toggles formed by links 58 and 59, to press the member 42 rearwardly into the position in whichlthe die is closed and is locked in closed position by the alignment of links 58 and 59. When the die is opened by causing plunger 51 to move forwardly, the toggles will be broken and the die opened, member 42 being drawn forwardly Frame 56 is carried by a support" which may be adjusted toward and away from the melting pot 1. As shown, frame 56 may be carried by a standard 63 mounted on rollers 64 which are adapted to move on a platform 65, The longitudinal position of frame 56- is adjusted in accordance with the dimen' sions of the die members which are to be used for any particular series of casting operations. This may be accomplished by providing frame 56 with bosses 66 through which extend the threaded tie rods 67, the
mounted on the tie rods at the rear side of gate member 88 and at the forward and rear sides of bosses 66. Rods 67 may extend through suitable sleeves 70 in the ram move back and forth over rods 67.
Support 65 above which the ram mechanism is carried may be adjusted at difl'erent desired heights by means of suitable mechanism such as the adjusting screws 71. Support 65 is carried by these screws, and
- as the latter are rotated in one direction or the other, support will be raised or lowered so as to raise or lower the mechanism carrying die member 42, so that the latter may properly align with die member 41,
when the latter and gate member 88 have been adjusted in a desired vertical positlon.
The preferred connections foradmitting' compressed air to the rear or upper ends of carrier devices 6 will now be descrlbed.
Pipe 72 is connected to a suitable air supply and is connected to a valve chamber 73. A valve stem 74c carries a valve 75 which is normally pressed against its seat in a slidably mounted member 76 by means of spring 77. l/Vhen air is to be admitted to the carrier devices, hand lever 78 is rocked to press rod 7 inwardly.
This serves, first, to press valve 75 away the outer end of member 76. The air pressure on the inner and outer ends of member 76 will accordingly be balanced, member 76 being the main valve member of the construction Upon a further inward movement of valve stem 74fthe boss 82 on valve stem- 74 will press against the outer face of member 76 to push the same inwardly. The inner end of, member 76 is normally 'seatedagainst a seat in a partition 83 andthe inward movement of the same just referred to opens a passage 84 in this partition so as to permit air to flow through the zontally extending pipes 87, 87 which are closed on their outer ends as is shown at 88 in Fig. 4. Sleeves 89 are mounted on tubular members 87, the longitudinal positions of sleeves 89 being adjusted by means of screws 90 which extend through the ends of the sleeves into the end portions 88 of members 87. Radial openings 91 in members 87 communicate with a longitudinal re cess 92 formed on the inner surface of each sleeve member, the lengths of recesses 92 being sufficient to permit a required longitudinal adjustment of the sleeve members on the tubular members. Suitable glands 93 are used to keep the construction air-tight. member 55, so that the latter will slidably 'from the lower ends of passages 95 and are connected by elbows 97 with tubular members 98 which extend in horizontal align-' ment. Sleeves 99 are rotatably mounted on tubular members 98 in the same manner as sleeves 89 are mounted on tubularmembers 87. Radial openings 100 in tubular members 98 conduct. the air into longitudinal recesses 101 provided insle'eve members 99. Vertical pipe connections 102 extend downwardly from sleeves 99, these pipes connecting with recesses 101. Elbows 103 connect the lower end ofpipes 102 with tubular members 104Lwhich are rotatably mounted in sleeve members 105 inthe same manner as in the connections described above. Pipe connections 9 extend downwardly from sleeves 105 to the upper end of carrier devices 6 as previously described.
lit will be seen thatthe above constructionv permits the required pivotal movement in the pipe connections as the carrier devices move from one position to the other, the construction also permitting adjustment of the pipe connections toward and awa' from each other in accordance with the ad justment of the carrier devices toward and away from each other.
It will be noted that our invention is not limited strictly to the details of construction described, but is as broad as is indi cated by the accompanying drawings.
What we claim is 1. 'In die-casting apparatus, the combination of a molten metal container, a plurality of carrier devices mounted in parallel relation above said container, having hollow interiors, months at the front and compressed air connections at the rear, means for swinging said devices simultaneously, so that said mouths will be submergedwithin the molten metal in the container in one position and will be registered with die openings in another position, and means for adjusting the positions of said devices inde pendently.
2. In die-casting apparatus, the combination of a molten metal container, a plurality of carrier devices mounted in parallel relation above said container, having hollow interiors, mouths at the front and compressed air connections at the rear, a transverse shaft, links arranged to swingingly support said devices therefrom at adjusta ble heights, supporting connections pivotally secured to the forward ortions of said devices, and means for swinging said devices simultaneously, so that said mouths will be submerged within the molten metal in the container in one position and will be registered with die openings in another position. y 3. In die-casting apparatus, the combination of a molten metal container, a plurality of carrier devices mounted in parallel relation above said container, havmg hollow 1nteriors, mouths at the front and compressed air connections at the rear, means for swmging said devices simultaneously, so that said mouths will be submerged within the molten metal in the container in onevposition and will be registered with horizontally arranged die openings in another position, and means for adjusting the positions of said devices, vertically and horizontally, independent a lndiecasting apparatus, the combination of a molten metal container, a plurality of carrier devices mounted in parallel relation above said container, having hollow interiors, mouths at the front andcompressed air connections at the rear, independent means for supporting said devices, such that the same may be moved laterallybodily of the container and oscillated, so that said air connections at the-rear, means for swin ing said devices simultaneously, so that said mouths will be submerged within the molten metal in the container in one position and,
will be registered with horizontally arranged die openings inanother position, and
having a plurality of horizontal openings' therethrough, adjacent said container, means for adjusting the position of said member with respect to said container, means for moving said carrier devices simultaneously so that said mouths will be sub-' merged within the molten metal in one position and will be registered with said openings in another position, and means for adjusting the positions of said devices independently.
7. In die-casting apparatus, the combination ofa molten metal container, a plurality of carrier devices mounted in parallel relation above said container, having hol low interiors, mouths at the front and compressed air connections at the rear, a gate member having'a plurality of horizontal openings therethrough, adjacent said container, means for adjusting the position of said member vertically with respect to said container, bushings in said openings, adapted to be adjusted horizontally therein, means for moving said carrier devices simultaneously so that said mouths will be submerged within the molten metal in one position and will be registered with said bushings in another position, and means for adjusting the positions of said devices independently.
8. In die-casting apparatus, the combination of a molten metal container, a plurality of carrier devices mounted in parallel relationfabove said container, having hollow interiors, mouths at the front and compressed air connections at the rear, an air supply pipe, pivoted connections between said pipe and the air connections on said carrier devices, comprising horizontal tube members and sleeve members thereon, means for swinging said devices simultaneously, so that said mouths will be submerged within the molten metal in the container in one position and will be registered with die openings in another position, means for.

and means for correspondingly adjusting the relative positions of said horizontal tube and sleeve members of said pivoted air connectionsi 9. In die-casting apparatus, the combination of a molten metal container a fixed frame carrying the same, a pair oi carrier devices in parallel relation above said container having hollow interiors, mouths at the front and compressed air connections at the rear, a pair of supporting members at the rear of said frame, means for adjusting the positions of the same independently, longitudinally and laterally of said container, swing supporting means pivotally secured to said devices, toggles pivotally se cured to said supporting members and to said swing supporting means, a single means for operating said toggles, and a pair of swinging arms pivotally secured to the forward portion of said devices, to support said mouths within the molten metal in the container-1n one position and above the massiof molten metal, in another position, for delivery or" their charges.
