To aZZ witam it may conoera Be it known that I, CHARLES GLUOKMAN, a citizen of the United States and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles, of which the folowing is a specification.

The present invention relates to improvements in handles for use in connection with hand bags or other carriers and wherein a maximum of stability and high water and moisture resisting properties are required of the handle together with lightness, smoothness of surface and low cost to manufacture.

The general object of the invention is the provision of a handle formed of eompressed fibrous material such as paper board and having the required maximum of moisture and water resisting properties required of a device of this kind, together with a smoothness of surface and adaptability for exterior finish with a coloring agent so that the handle may be made to sii'nulate 'the material of which the bag is formed; and further, having a minimum of weight and the stable properties of the better grade of hand'les, together with a construction of parts adapted to be united in a simple and expeditious manner without the use of thread or a relatively tedious and expensive stitehing operation.

To these ends the invention resides in a shell or body formed of oppositely disposedl matching sections of compressed ifibrous material such as paper board having peripheral flanges and an insert disposed between the Sections and adhesively seeured thereto thereby Operating to reiuforce the sections and co-operate with the flanges which are adhesively secured together to firmly unite the Sections against displacement. The structure being such that the said sections and insert are assembled while in a relatively pliable state and subsequently subjeeted to a great pressure in a press and thereby compressed and rendered rigid.

Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of the invention of which the following is a specification reference being had to the accompanying` drawings forming partthereof and in which:

Figure 7 is an enlarged detail side elevation of one end portion of the handle.

In Figure l the shell or body A77 constituting the handle is formed of paper board or the like rendered rigid by compression and additionally reinforced by an insert indicated by 15 in Figures 3, 4, and 6, the said insert being formed of any suitable material, preference being given to material corresponding to that forming the shell or body A.

Sections 5 and 6 which constitute the shell A are provided with peripheral flanges 7, 8. The seetions correspond or match one with the other and the fianges provide generous bearing surfaces for an adhesive which is applied to the flanges, and thereby operates to unite the said section-s. The portions of the Sections flanked by the fianges 7 and 8 have 'their inner faces provided with longitudinal concave depressions 9 which impart a rotundity to the outer faces of the sections and thereby adapt these when assembled. as shown in Figures l and 6 to provide a shell 01' body with the usual round Contour. to points adjaeent to the ends thereof. The adjacent surfaces of the insert and sections are secured together by an adhesive so that the presenee of the insert not only operates to reinforce the sections 5 and 6 against collapse but co-operates with the flanges 7 and 8 'to unite the Sections 5 and 6. This'structure moreover permits the-trimming` or remeval of the portions of the fianges on the inner side of the Shell or body A, so that the inner side portion, which is embraced by the hand when the handle is in use is smooth int/0,855

conform to any of the conventional shapes ot' handles tor hand bags, grips and the like. The compression of the material forming this shell renders the same with water and inoistui'e resisting properties correspondinp; to those in handles ot the better grade. The stability ot the shell constrncted as described is equal to that ot the better grades ot handles of even greater weight.

Althongh l have shown and described an ideal embodiinent of the invention, it is to be understood that l reserve the privilege oi adopting all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.

l claim:

1. A handle comprising two matehing members each havinrg` concave-convex surfaces and made ot tibrous plastic material and flanges surrounding the same, and an insert placed between the matching members and within the eoncave portions thereot, and extending along the length ot the lower joint o'" 'the matching members and having a dished shaped cross section throughont its length.

2. A handle comprising two matchijng members each having' concave-convex sur- 'faces and fianges surrounding the same, an

insert placed between the matching members and within the concave portions thereo't, said inatchingV members having a part ot said vtlang'es cut away at the lower portion ot the handle and having openings at each end, the openings at the adjacent ends ot the matehing` members registering' with each other and metallic fastening devices eX- tending :from one opening to the other registering' opening, but only partially around the openings.

3. A rig'id handle tor hand bags and the like having' its rigidity iniparted by compression and comprising two matching` see-- tions ot longitudinal and transverse concavo-convex cross-sectional contour and i'ormed of fibrous material, said Sections being' provided with peripheral flanges adhesively secnred together prior to compressing` the section, and an insert ot longitndinal and transverse concavo-convex cross- Scctional Contour disposed between said sections and adhesively secured thereto.

A handle tor hand bags and the like ('.oinprising a Shell or body 'formed of lihrous material rendercd rig'id by compression and provided adjacent its opposite ends with transverse openings7 split resilienthnshing's of greater i'adii than the open-- inne and disposed therein and an insert ot fibrous material rendered rigid by compression and disposed within the Shell and adhesi'a'ely secured thereto.

5. A handle for bags and the like comshell or body tornied of fibrous material rendered rigid by compression and provided adjacent its opposite ends with transverse opening's and having its enter side Hanked by a peripheral tlange extending around the ends of the shell and inerg' ing in the inner side thereot at points inwardly beyond the said openings, split resilient bushings ot greater radii than the openings and disposed therein, and an insert :forined ot ibrous material rendered rigid by compression and disposed within the shell and adhesively secured thereto.

6. A handle ;tor hand bagijs and the like comprising Companion Sections having means to center the same, said means adapted to be subsequently remove-d, and means disposed interiorly of the Sections 'tor securing the same together said means being arranged tor engageinent with the inner Surfaces oit said Sections ;tor the major portion ot their length,

A handle :tor hand bag's and the like comprising longitudinally split Companion sections having' flanges above and below the same for initially centering' and facilitatino,r the assembling' oit the sections, said tlangzfes adapted to be partially or wholly removed subsequent to the asseinbling of the sections, and an insert within the Sections :tor securing the same together said insert being arranged tor eng'agement with the inner surfaces of said Sections tor the major portion ot their lengthq and being; adhesively secured to the Sections.

8. A rigid handle tor handbags and the like, comprising' two Companion sections ot longjitudinal and transverse concavo-convex cross sectional Contour secured together adhesively at their outer edges, and an insert of longitudinal and transverse concavoconvex cross-sectional contour corresponding' to the Contour ot said companion sections, said insert being' disposed within the Sections over one ot the joints between the Sections in a manner to extend to a substantially equal entent on both sides ot the joint and being' adhesirclv Secured to the Sections so as to cooperate in binding` the Sections together.

9. A handle having' oppositelj,7 disposed sections concave on their inner surface and center: on their orter surface joined to- ,q'ether at their upper marq'ins by means ot flanges ormed thereon and at their lower margins by an edge abuttinr joint, and a reinforcingI plate corresponding' in oiitline with that of the lower inner Surface ot said sections, extendinp; over Said joint, and adhesively secured to the inner surface ot the lower margins of said Sections.

10. handle having` oppositely disposed corresponding Sections, concave on their inner surfacen and convex on their outer surface joined together' at their upper mar- ;zins by means of contact fianges fornied thereon, and at their lower inargins by an edge abutting joint, a reinforcng plate c0rresponding in Outline With that of the lower inner surface of said Sections, extending over said joint, and adhesively secured to said inner surfaces of the lower margins of said Sections, the ends of said Sections being provided With apertui'es, and Split resilient bushngs disposed therein, of a greater i'adi than that of said apertures.
