To all whom it may concern.' n
Be it known that I, AUGUST Nlrnivnnin'a citizen of the Republic of Finland, residing at Detroit,in the county of Wayne andV State of Michigan, have invented new and useful improvements in Scribing Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatesto tools used in the metal and wood-working trades for scratching or scoring lines on the material to aocurately locate the places where the same is to be cut, and the invention has for vits object to provide a very simple and eicient tool of this kind, the same consisting of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that the invention may be better Y understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, wherein-- Figure 1 is a plan view of the tool;
Figs. 2 and 8 are side'elevations illustrating two different ways of using the tool, and
Fig. 1 is a sideelevation of a modification.
Referring specifically to the drawing, and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 3, the reference numeral 10 denotes a scale blade having at one of its ends an upstanding flange 11 which may be formed by a right-angled bend in the blade. The scalegraduations are on that side ofthe blade from which the iiange projects. A short distance from the iiange 11, and on the sameA side of the blade 10 as said flange, the blade carries a post 12 having a transverse aperture in which is slidably mounted a graduated scriber rodI 13. A set screw 14, threaded Yinto the post to engage the scriber rod is employed for holding the latterV in adjusted position.
The scriber rod 13 projects from opposite sides of the post 12 sothatone end may lie above the graduated side of the blade 10, whereas its other end passes loosely through an aperture in the flange 11. Each end of the seriber rod has a scribing point, the same being denoted by the reference numerals 15 and 16, respectively. Both scribing points may be lateral bends at the ends of the rod, said bends having sharpened or pointed extremities.
The scribing point 15 1s used principally in automobile body and other sheet metal work where the sheet metal is to Vproject a certain distance from the edge of the wood so that it may be bent over the same. 1n using the tool `tor this work, the scriber rod 13 is slid until the point 15 is opposite the graduation oii the blade 10 which denotes the desired distance thel metal is to project from the edge of the wood. The rod is locked in adjusted position by the set screw 14. The point 15 being now located inwardly of the end of the blade, the tool is placed so that the projecting piece of metal comes between the point and the opposite side of the blade 10, and the latter is then advanced until. the aforementioned end thereof comes in Contact with the edge of the wood, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be understood that the scribcr point is spaced from the scale blade a suticient distance to permit the sheet metal to be marked to come therebetween. Now, with the edge of the wood guiding the blade 10 l the latter is drawn along said edge so that the scriber point 15 may scratch a line on the metal. A slight pressure on the rod 13 in a direction to bring the scribe-r point in contact with the metal to be marked suffices to scratch the line on the same..
As shown in Fig. 3, the scriber point 16 may be used for scratching a line a certain distance from the edge of a piece of wood, the rod 13 being set to leave the point projecting this distance from the fiangell, and the latter being placed against the edge of the work to guide the tool. The scale on the rod 13 is used `for this setting of the scriber point 16.
Fig. 4 shows a slight modication. Here, instead of the scriber point 16, a rotatable scriber wheel 17 is provided.
I claim:
1. A scribing tool comprising a scale blade having one side graduated, a post on the graduated side thereof, and a longitudinally adjustable rod carried by the post and eX- tending parallel tothe blade, said rod having a scriberv point positioned opposite and spaced from the graduated side of the scale blade.
2. A scribing tool comprising a scale blade having one side graduated, a post on the graduated side thereof, and a longitudinally adjustable rod carried by the post and extending parallel to the blade, said rod having a lateral end bend in the direction of the graduated side of the scale blade, with its extremity pointed and spaced from sai side.
3. A scribing tool comprising a scale blade having one side'graduatedand having an Vapertured later-al flange lat one end, a post apertuiled lateral flange at Vone end, .a'post onv the'graduatecl'sidevof 4said blade, and a Y on the graduated sideV of said blade, and a longitudinally adjustableV and graduated longitudinally adjustable rod carried by the rod carried by the postrparallel to the blade,
scribers at its ends, and one end of the rod end of the'ro passing loosely through the passing loosely through the aperture ofthe aperture of the aforesadflange.- 'A aforesaid Hange. vIn testimony whereof Iaixmy signature.
