UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
CHARLES L. W. BAKER, OF CAMDEN, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN L.MASON, OF NEW BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT lN CLAMPS FOR SPLICING BROOM-HANDLES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,041, dated December 30, 1873; application filed December 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES L. W. BAKER, of the city and county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Splice for Handles of Brushes, Mop-Holders, &c.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, suflicient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this specification, in
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
This invention consists of a splicefor increasing the length of the handle of a brush, mopholder, 80c.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a clamp for splicing sections or lengths B B of the handle of a brush or similar household article, and consists of a piece, preferably of metal, bent into cylindrical or tubular form for the reception of the lengths or sections of the handle, and the ends of the piece are formed with or bent into flanges C C, which project from the body of the clamp or splice in a line corresponding to the longitudinal section thereof. D represents a rod, which is laid on one side of the length of the flanges, and its ends are bent and passed through the flanges C. Nuts G are fitted onthe bent ends of the rod and adapted to press against the adjacent flange, so that, when the nuts are tightened, the rod causes the flanges to come uniformly together the whole length of the-clamp,whereby, as the hold of the clamp is exerted at the middle as well as at the ends of the rod, the applied sections will be grasped or bound at every point within the clamp, and thus all shaking and disengagement of the handle are prevented.
The flanges C may be turned inwardly to form yielding faces for the flanges, and thus permit the clamp to conform to any irregularity or inequality of the handle, as well as to insure a uniform pressure of the body of the clamp.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I The splice for handles of brushes, 850., consisting of the flanged tube A, in combination with the longitudinally-arranged rod D, having its ends bent and passing through the flanges of the tube A, and with 'the nuts G, substantially as and forthepurpose set forth. CHARLES L. W. BAKER.
