PENCIL HOLDER AND SHARPENER.

' igi //20/2/0/.' KEMMW En s'r n it EMME T'I FISHER, F QUINCY, ELIN'OIS.
PENCIL HOLDER AN'D SHARPEN'ER.
Application filed November 15, 1920. Serial No. 424,155.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMMETT Fisnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the county of Adams and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil Holders and Shar eners, of which 'the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined pencil holder and pen-knife and has for its object to provide a simple, neat and inexpensive pencil clip 'or holder having a blade for sharpening the pencil. I
Another object of the invention is to provide a pen-knife consisting of a casing and a sliding blade carried thereby in combina tion with a pencil holder or clip. I
With the above and other objects in view I have invented the device illustrated in accompanying drawings in which:
Figure l is an elevational View of my device shown attached to a pencil,
Figure 2 is a similar View taken from another side, a a
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the device shown detached from the pencil and the blade extended,
Figure 4- is a plan view of the stamped blank from which the device is formed, and Figure 5 is a detail plan view of the blade. Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the following specification and in the several views of the drawings in which 1 indicates a combined casing for the slidable blade 2 and pencil clip. -The device is formed from a blank 3 struck from a single sheet of metal and consists of a shank 4 having at one end a pair of laterally extending wings 5 and 6 which are e0 bent into arcuate formation to form spring clips to engage the pencil 7. The other end of the shank terminates in a body portion 8 which is substantially rectangular the sides 9 and 10 being extended laterally beyond the longitudinal edges of the shank and are bent over the central portion 11. The body portion after it has thus been formed is bent over the shank 4 whereby the shank iprovides a fonrth side to form a casing for the knife blade 12 which is slidable in and out of said casing the blade passing out'through the slot 13 provided at ajuncture of the body portion and shank, said casing being bent upon the shank 4 on a line with said slot. The blade 12 is provided with a square head 14 fitting [5a snugly in said casing and said head has a pin 15 WhlCll projects through the slot 16 formed approximately on the line of the fold 17, by means of which projecting pin 15 the b1ade 12 may be operated slidably in and on out of sald casing. The square head 14 operating 1n the casing holds the blade firm when in use. The tongue 18 on the extreme end of the shank 4 is bent over the ends 19 and 20 of the walls 9 and 10 whereby the 34 shank and casing are held together at their outer ends, and the extension 21 of wall 11 is bent over said tongue and forms a closure for the upper end of the casing. The lower end of the shank is bent out as at 22 N a ainst the pencil 7, and, due to the res1 iency of the metal of which the device is made, forms a spring clip to engage the edge of .a pocketin which the pencil is held, thus forming the pencil clip. W8
Having now described my invention, that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
1. A pencil holder and sharpener comprising a casing formed from a single blank in- @(1 eluding a shank portion having wings extending laterally from opposite longitudinal edges of the shank and bent to provide a pencil clip, one end of the shank beingenlarged to provide three sides of a casing and 81 bent upon the shank to provide the fourth side, and a knife blade adjustably mounted in said casing.
' 2. A pencil holder and sharpener comprising a casing formed from a single blank in- 38 eluding a shank portion having at one end means extending laterally thereof and bent to provide a pencil clip, the shank at its other end being enlarged laterally to form a body portion which when folded provides three of the sides of the casing, one of said sides being equipped with a longitudinally extending slot, the blankat the juncture of the shank and body portion being equipped a pin extending through said longitudinally 10 with the transversel arranged opening, the extending slot.

mounted in said casing and projectable WM. F, FISCHER, through said transverse opening, and having W. H. MILLER.
