A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of scissors having a stitch ripping knife associated therewith in an approved manner so that a neat non-bulky article will be provided and which will add to the appearance of the scissors rather than detracting from the appearance thereof.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which drawings:

The stitch ripping blade B maybe of any desired configuration and is preferably formed of a good grade of steel and includes the longitudinally extending cutting edge 17 One end of the blade B is provided with the shank or hilt portion 18, the opposite faces of which are arranged in parallel relation to one another and are adapted to form the engaging faces 19 for the latching spring 14:.

When the blade B is in its inoperative position, the same is swung on the pivot pin 16 until the sharp cutting edge 17 thereof is positioned in the longitudinally extending groove 12 formed in the shank 7. The spring 14 which is of the leaf type engages the flat surface of the shank thereof and absolutely precludes accidental swinging movement of the same on the pivot pin 16. The terminals of the spring 14 are fitted in the corners of the recessed or notched portion 13, and the the knife blade is adapted to fit when the blade is swung to its operative position. The provision of the groove 21 absolutely preeludes lateral movement of the blade B when the same is in its extended operative position and thus eliminates all strains on the pivot pin 16. The forward end of the blade B ad jacent to its cutting edge is provided with the finger nail receiving recesses 22, which permit the ready grasping of the knife blade when it is desired to close the same.

The position of the knifeblade B is such as to permit the most effective using thereof and it can be seen that the handle or finger loops of the scissor will form the handle for the knife blade B.

From the foregoing description, it can'be seen that an improved combination toolhas beenprovided, which is especially adapted for dress makers or the like in which the cutting of garments and the ripping of seams may be accomplished with the same instrument and thus eliminate the necessity of providing separate tools for each one of the operations. I

Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,

I claim: p

1. In combination, a pair of scissors having a longitudinally extending groove formed in the outeredge of one shank of one .of its blades, a pair of depending ears formed on said shank intermediate the terminals of the groove, the inner wall of said groove having an inwardly extending notch positioned directly inwardly of said ears, a

knife blade, a pivot pin connecting said knife blade to said ears, the shank of said knife blade having its edges arranged in parallel relation and flattened to form bearing bases, and an arcuate leaf spring having its terminals fitted in the opposite corners of said recessed portion and arranged to engage the flattened faces of the shank of the knife.

2. In combination, a pair of scissors having a longitudinally extending groove formed in the outer edge of one shank of one of its blades, a pair of outwardly extending ears formed on said shank intermediate the terminals of the groove, the inner wall of said groove having an inwardly extending notched portion, an arcuate spring having its terminals fitted in'the corners of said notched portion, a pivot pin carried by said ears, a knife blademounted upon said pivot pin, the knife blade being adapted to fit in said groove when in its opened or closed position, the knife blade having parallel flattened faces arranged on the opposite sides of the pivot pin arranged to engage the arcuate body of the leaf spring when the blade is in its opened or closed position, said knife blade having finger nail receiving recesses formed therein adjacent to its opposite longitudinal edges.
