To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ll, GEORGE W. MOSHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newport, in the county of Campbell and State of Kentucky, have invented a certain new" and useful Whirligig Toy, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the drawings forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to Whirligig toys, of
- the type which has a drum, with a cord to coil around it, by means of which they are raised and lowered by applying a slight lifting motion to the cord, when the drum has unwound therefrom, said motion being sufficient to cause them to wind the cord up again. Such toys are popular with children,s'ince they may become quite proficient in dropping the whirling-drum and having it return to them.
It is the object of my invention to provide also my object by the conformation and structure of the drum member to facilitate the operations thereof, and in connection with the drum I provide a means for causing it to rattle during the-operations without afl'ecting it's perfect balancerequisite for even winding and unwinding movement.
I accomplish my objects by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out and claimed.

I provide a cord 1 having some desirable finger hold 2, by which'it is held at its free end, the other end being secured to the drum member.
The drum member is formed of a pair of hollow disks mounted upon a spindle. The disks are made up of outer concave plates 3, crimped over inner plates 4, soldering being unnecessary according to my experience. The inner faces of the inner plate 4:, as shown at 5, 5, are made fiat,'so that when assembled on the spindle there is formed an extended space of uniform width, preferably just wide enough to easily contain one strand of the operating cord.
The spindle or pin, is fiat and has ends 6, 6, for passing through the disk members, and a widened and perforated central 'port1on 7, which spaces the disks, and provides a point of attachment for the operating cord. The ends 6, 6, havesplit termini to be bent over for binding the parts together as at 8.

The result of this construction is that the rings or what-not will rest against the periphery of thedisks, during the spinning operation thereof, and will not accumulate at a certain point in the periphery and throw the device out of, balance, since the weight is always borne on the spindles, and
a rattling noise imparted to the device which will always be present during operation thereof.
As so constructed the player wrapsthe cord around the spindle, same fitting easily into the equal Width space between the disks, but not jamming therein, and then holding onto the end of. the cord, drops the toy. The toythen unwinds from the cord, gaining a rapid revolution, which witha slight upward pull atthe moment that the cord is unwound, will cause it towind up on the cord again and come back to the hand.
I. amaware-that" the toys operating on thisprinciple are not novel, and my invention is directed to the improvements above noted. I may note with regard to the spindle that the spacing portion is rectangular, thereby serving as a tight spacer, even if the disks are forced around on the spindle by rough usage.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. In a device of the character described, a pair of hollow disks, having their inner faces of a flat conformation, means for securing said disks together, and an operating cord secured at the axial point of said disks, for the purpose described with means mounted loosely on the spindle within the disks to serve as a noise producer.
