PENNSYLVANIA, A. 003,.
STAMPED METAL WHEEL.
Application filed May 12,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEWIS FINE, a citizen .of the United States, residingat Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamped Metal Wheels, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de scriptlon.
:This invention relates to improvements in metal wheels,.particularly of the type adapted to be employed in connection with trucks, tractors, and the like.
One object of the invention is to provide a wheel of this character which is of strong. but simple construction and efficient in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal wheel of the disc type hav- 1ng an improved arrangement of bracing elements for spacing the disc sections from each other.
A- further obi'ect of the invention is to provide a whee of this character havin improved means for supporting the rim and retaining the same in position upon the wheel discs.
A further object of this invention is to provide a wheel of this character having certain improved details of construction and arrangement of the parts, which will be more fully described hereinafter.
Further objects of this invention relate to economics of manufacture and details of construction, as will hereinafter appear from the detailed description to follow.
The objects of the invention are accomplished in one instance by the devices and means described in the following specification, but it is evident that'the same may be varied widely without departing from the scope of the invention, as pointed out in the appended claims.
A structure constituting one embodiment of the invention, which may be the preferred, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a art hereof, in which:
Figure I is a si e elevation of a wheel structure, embodying the present invention, having a portion thereof broken away. I
Fi re II is a transverse, vertical, sectiona view taken 'along the line IIII of Figure I.
-Figure III is a vertical, sectional view taken along the line III-III of Figure II,
Specification of Letters Patent.

and illustrating the relative position of the spacing rings with respect to each other and the hub.
Referring to the drawing, similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and the sect onal views are taken looking in the directlon ofithe small arrows at the ends of the section lines.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated herewith, 10 designates a hub provided with an outwardly extending annular flange 11 formed integral therewith and positioned adjacent one end of the hub. A pair of wheel discs 12 and 13 of similar construction are each provided with a central opening formed of such a size as to fit over the outer cylindrical portion of the hub member when assembled in position relative to each other. Cutaway portions 14 of similar size and shape are formed in the wheel. discs intermediate the portions of the discs which fit over the hub and the outer peripheral portions thereof, these cutaway portions being formed ,-in the discs in a manner as to register with each other when the discs. are in assembled position, and so positioned relative to each other as to provide radially extending spoke portions 15 positioned between adjacent cutaway portions and extending outwardl from the central portion of the wheel discs towards the peripheries thereof. Lock bars 16 provided with outwardly extending edge portions 17 and 18 are positioned within the cutaway openings 14 formed in the wheel discs, and when the various parts of the wheel structure are properly assembled, the outwardly extending edges 17 and 18 of the lock bars are bent over the outer surfaces of the wheel discs adjacent to the cutaway portions in such a manner as to form flanges engaging the outer surfaces of the wheel discs' and assisting in securing the same properly in position relative to each other. Each of the wheel discs is provided with an offset peripheral edge portion comprising a part 19 oflset'from the original plane of the disc, and an outwardly extending part 20 located in a lane substantially parallel to the original-p ane of the disc, the portion 20 terminating in a beveled edge 21 formed for a purpose which will be more fully described hereinafter.
A pair of annular plates 22 and 23 are positioned between the wheel discs adjacent the hub portion of the wheel in such a'manner as to bear against the wheel discs 12 and 13 respectively. The inner and outer spacing rings 24 and 25 are positioned between the Wheel discs adjacent the hub portion of the wheel and concentric with the axis .thereof, the said spacing rings 24 and 25 being provided with reducededge portions fitting against'correspondingly formed edge portions upon the annular rings 22 and 23 in such a manner as to produce a rigid bracing structure for properly spacing the wheel discs 12 and 13 from each other, and assisting in retaining the same in proper relative position. A brake drum 26 provided with an inwardly extending annular flange 27; is positioned upon the inner end of the hub member in such a manner that the inwardly extending annular flange 27 bears against the outer surface of the wheel disc 13 adjacent the central portion thereof, and the brake drum, wheel hub and wheel discs are firmly secured together by means of bolts 28, or other suitablesecuring means ssed through registering openings form in the annular portion 11 of the wheel hub, the brake drum, the wheel discs and the annular lates. I
A p urality of T-shaped cross braces 30, each of which is provided with a main outwardly extending web portion 31 and a pair of oppositely extending flanges 32 formed upon the ase portion thereof, are supported by the out-turned portions 19 of the wheel discs and spaced from each other throughout the circumference of the wheel. A rim 34 is provided with grooves 35 formed upon the inner surfaces of the side edges thereof, and the rim 34 is preferably shrunk upon the outer surface of the wheel in such a manner as to bear against the outwardly extending portions 31 of the T-shaped cross braces, an have the (grooves 35 formed therein register with an fit over the beveled edges 21 of theperipheral ed e portions of the discs so as to be firmly c amped in engagement therewith and prevent the rim.
fromfbecoming disengaged from the outer surface of the wheel.
It will be understood from the above desription that "the spacing rings 24 and'25, together with the annular plates 22 and 23 co-operating therewith, provide a simple and efficient form of spacing means adapted to be positioned between a pair 9f wheel discs in such a manner as to properly space the same from each other, and these arts co-operate with securing bolts 28 to orm a firm and rigid wheel structure wherein the wheel discs are properly spaced from each other and securely attached to the wheel hub.
' The lock bars 16, when secured in position between the wheel discs with the opposite discs in proper the wheel edge ( portions 17 and 18 bent outwardly over the e gee of the portions of the-wheel discs forme by the cutaway openings, serve as an additional spacing means for spacing the discs from each other, and also serve as an additional meansfor securingthe wheel discs in osition relative to each other. The rim 34 is preferably shrunk upon the outer portion of the wheel in such a manner as to fit tightly thereupon, and the co-operating beveled edge portions of the disc and the ooves formed in the rim register with eac other in such a manner as to provide apositively acting securing means for retaining the rim upon the outer surface of the wheel. The
securing bolts 36 passed through the pe-' ripheral edge portions of the wheel discs and spaced from each other throughout the circumference of the wheel serve to secure the outer peripheral portions of the wheel sition relatively to each other and draw t cm into close contact with the ends o-f'the cross braces so as to assist in firmly securing the braces in position within the eripheral edge portions of the disc.
T e wheel structureythus formed has the various portions thereof securely braced together in such a manner as to form a firm and rigid structure, which is capable of withstanding the various strains to which it is liable to be subjected, while the various parts are capable of being readily formed and assembled in position to make the completed wheel. f
While I have shown and described in considerable detail 'a specific embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that this showing and description is illustrative only, and for the purpose of rendering my invention more clear, and that I do not regard the invention as limited to the details ofconstruction illustrated or described, nor any of them, except-in so far as I have. included such limitation within the terms of'the following claims, in which it is my intention to claim all novelty inherent in my invention broadly as well as specifically.
