Lacher?.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that` l, OBEN F. ROBERTS, a
y citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county. of Jackson and `State of `Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My'invention relates to improvements in wrenches.v v v It relates particularly to ratchet wrenches and is of a type employing a screw for turning a nut or holt, the vscrew being turned by reciprocation of a handle thereon. Y
The object of my invention? is to'provide a wrench of .the kind describedV with novel means for effecting turning 'of thek screw, which is simple in` construction, relatively cheap to manufactura'durable, not liable to which is not accessible `to the wrenches 11Su` get; out of order, whichk is adapted for useV in corners and conned places,'s.uch as are found in automobile construction, and 'which may beV used to quickly turn a nut or bolt,
ally used for such purposes. i Y
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described-and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferredembodiment of my invention, I
Figure '11 is an elevation ofmy improved wrench. i i

l designates a handle, preferably l'shape :l,
is llongitudinally reciprocativeV a rotatable screw 3 having two. reversely disposed threads 5 and; 4, which are respectively en#l gaged with two ratchet members 6 and 7, which. are rotatable on the screw 3, and which `are providedV with oppositely disposed teeth 8 and 9.adapted tobe, engaged byt'wo teeth l0 andv 11 respectively of a pawl 12,
vided in the yshank 2, Figs. 7 and 8.
v VThe pawl 121s slidablymounted 1n a longitudinal groove 13,.'pro-- Then the pawl 12 is inthe `position shown' in Fig. 4, the toothv l0 thereof will engage the teeth 8 and'will hold the ratchet mem The`A tooth 11 will bedisengaged from the teeth 9, thus permitting theiratchetmember 9to Y rotate with the screw-,3. When the pawl 'is' in theV position shown in Fig. 5, it 'willen- .I
gage the teeth9v of the ratchet member thus locking saidv ratchet member. vvIn Athis v position, the tooth 10 of the-,pawll will be disengaged from the` teeth 8, sothatthe ratchet member yis free to turn in either direction. c Y Y lVhen the pawl 12 is inthe position' shown and l9, and the ratchet members 6, and 7 both be held from rotation. Y
For moving the pawl 12. from the inter! mediate position shown inFig. 8 to thetwv Win Y positions shown 'in Figs.l 4 and 5,`and for yieldingly holding the pawl in the set vpositionthe pawl is heldbetween the ends of a. bow-shaped spring 14, theconvex 'side ofwhich, that is the outer side, lbears against the inner side of'asleeve 15, whi'c'his slipped ony and rigidly securedto the shank '2 and which is provided withalon'gitudinal slot'- has a projection 19 which is slidablyfitted f in the thread 5 of the screw 3. 'llhefratchet member 7 has similar projection 2`whichr is slidably fitted in thethread 4, Fig. As
shown, the thread IV5 is. a lright hand thread f and-the thread 4 isa'left hand thread.
longitudinal coil spring 21, Fig. f?, in
8.5 in Fig. 8,l it will engage both sets of-teeth ld the shank 2 bears against the ripper end olf the screw 3 for lifting the handle atter it has to the position been' forced downwardly shown in llig. 7.
For holding the screw 3 in its innermost Y 3, the screwhas a peripheral groove 30, Figs. '7, and l0, adapted to receive therein an inwardly extending pin 3l mounted within a ring` 32, which is revoluble on the sleeve The pin 3l extends through a hole 33 in the sleeve# l5 and is carried on the tree end of a flat spring 34:, Fig. l0, which is mounted in a peripheral groove 35, in the sleeve l5, the other end oi' the spring` 3a* being' rigidly attached to the sleeve l5. lThe inner side' or the ring is provided with a cam'groove 36, which permits the pin 3l to be forced out oli the groove 30, by the spring` 3d, i hen the ring` 32 is I Y turned to a position in which' the deepest part of the cam groove 36 is opposite the pin 3l. y
When the ring` 32 is turned to the position shown in Fig. l0, vthe pin 3l will pass out of the groove 36 and will Vbe forced by the inner side of the ring 32 into the groove 30, when the screw 3 has-been forced the innermost position shown in Fig. 3;
A threaded collar 37 litted in lthe scre. threaded lower end of the sleeve l5 entends outwardly beyond the inner side of the ring` 32, thereby holding the latter on the sleeve `such that a right-hand threaded nut or bolt engaged by the soclret member 29 will be scr wed inwardly, the block l? is slid downwardly to the position in which the pawl l2 will engage the ratchet member 7, as shown in Fig. 5, in which position, whenvthe handle is forced downwardly, the ratchet meniber Z will cause the screw to turn clockwise or to the right.
To unscrew the nutor bolt, the block l? is slid to a position in which the pawl l2 will engage they ratchet member 6. l-leciproca tion of the handle will now cause the ratchet member 6 to tnrn the` screw 3 counter clockwise or to the lett, thus unscrewing a right hand nut or bolt. f
llfith my improved wrench, access may be had to bolts or nuts located in corners and in deep confined places and which are not accessible for the use or ordinary wrenches or monkey wrenches. Y y Y l do not limit my invention to the struc-V ture shown and described, as many modi` lica'tions, within the scope oi the appended claims 1' y the spirit of my invention.
lll hat l claim is :-f
l. ln a wrench, a shanlr handle, a screw reciprocative therein having' two reversely disposed threads, two ratchet members having reversely disposed teeth and rotatable in said handle and respectively ittedto said threads., and a pawl having; means' tor engagement with said handle and movable ther on to two positionsin which it will respectivelyv alternately lockinely engageV ratchet members, and movable to an intermediate position in which it will simulsaid taneously. loclingly engage both ol ratchet members, substantially as set forth. 2. a wrench, a shank. handle, a: screw eciprocative therein having two reversely li nosed threads, two ratchet members reiAetively tted to said threads` and rotaon said screv, the shank handle havlongitndinal slot, and a pawl slidabiy i said slot to two positions in which it 'will alternately lockingjly engage said ratchet members, and in, an intermediate position simultaneously lochingly engage' both ofsaid ratchet members, snbstantially as set forth.v
ltnwtestimony whereof l have signed my name to this speciiication.
