To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN ROMEYN Cause, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented a new and useful Umbrella, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to umbrellas, one of its objects being to provide trussed ribs whereby the umbrella is strengthened and although given an increased spread, is better able to withstand the'action of strong winds than are umbrellas of the usual construction.

Another object is to provide an umbrella which, when folded, has the appearance of an ordinary umbrella but which, when raised, provides greater clearance under the top because the stretchers are shiftable to higher positions on the rod than is possible with the usual stretchers.

l/Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.

In said drawings Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of a portion of an umbrella frame, the ribs being shown by full lines in extended positions and, by dotted lines in folded positions.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line 2-2, Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged view partly in evelation and partly in section of the stationary sleeve.

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the umbrella rod to which is fixedly connected a sleeve 2 provided, near each of its ends with an annular groove 3 having notches 42 in the walls thereof. Each of these notched Portions is adapted to receive the flattened ends of rods which are held pivotally to the sleeve by wires such as used in the ordinary umbrella constructions. The rods 5 extending into the notches 4: in the walls of the upper groove 3 constitutes the ribs of the umbrella while the rods 6 which extend into the notches in the walls of the lower groove 3 constitute reinforcements and are hingedly connected as at 7 to the ribs 5 at points removed inwardly from the free ends of the ribs. The length of each of the rods 6 is less than the distance between the pivot 7 points thereon and also to the rods 6, and

extending from the points of connection between these links and the rod 6 are stretchers 9 which are pivotally connected in the usual manner to a sleeve 10 slidable on the rod 1. A catch 11 is carried by the rod 1 and serves to hold the sleeve 10 against movement when the umbrella is open.

When the umbrella is folded the rods 5 and '6 and the stretches 9 will lie substantially parallel with and close to the rod 1 so that the umbrella will have the appearance of the usual construction. When it is desired to open the umbrella the sleeve 10 is pushed along the rod 1 and past and into engagement with the catch 11. The stretchers 9 will thus cause the rods 5 and 6 to swing outwardly and as the rods 6 are shorter than the rods and swing about different centers, the said rods 6 will cause the rods 5 to bow while, at the same time, the links 8 will move relative to the rods and act as positive spacing means between the rods, thereby completing a truss structure capable of resisting strong winds.

What is claimed is An umbrella including a stationary sleeve, rods arranged in pairs and radiating from the sleeve, the rods of each pair being pivotally connected at their inner ends to the respective ends of the sleeve, the outer end of one of the rods being pivoted to the second rod of the pair at a point spaced in from the outer end of said second rod, spreading links pivotally connected to the intermediate portions of the rods of each pair, a movable sleeve, stretchers connecting the movable sleeve to the spreading links, and a rod fixedly connected to the stationary sleeve and slidably engaged by the movable sleeve.
