Description

' M. 0. STEEN.
T A Mafia/7 find/J g Q A61 W4 ATTORNEY WITNESS Patented Dec. 7, 1920. i
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MELVIN O. STEEN, OF KNOX, NORTH DAKOTA.
TOY.
Application filed March 8,
0 all to 710m 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVIN O. Srnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Knox, in the county of Benson and State of North Dakota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys and has particular application to tops.
The object residing in the provision of a top of novel construction in combina ion with novel means for imparting a spinning motion to the top.
To this end, the invention makes use of a manipulating element provided with a slot for the reception or the stem of the top, the stem carrying a gear and meshing with serrations in one wall of the slot for imparting rotation and spinning motion to the top when the parts are separated.
Another object of the invention resides in providing a top with a plurality of fans ar ranged in spaced relation, and adapted to rotate in a direction opposite to the rotation of the top to add to the attractiveness oi the toy.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol lowing detail description is taken in cornicetion with the accompanying drawings, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
in the drawing forming part of this spewification, like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several vices and wherein Figure 1 is a View in elevation showing the manipulating element associated with the top.
Fig. tion.
Fig.
2 is a view of the top partly in sec- 3 is a plan view of the manipulating element.
deferring to the drawing in detail, 10 indicates a top of any preferred construction including a stem 11. Fixed upon the stem 11 is a small gear 12, while disposed above the gear and loosely mounted upon the stem is a finger engaging element 13. The manipulating element for imparting spinning motion to the top 10 is illustrated in Fig. 2 and includes a body portion 14 having a longi- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
1920. Serial No. 364,181.
tudinal slot 15 for the reception of the stem and gear 12 and a knob 16 at one end as shown. One of the separated members defined by the slot 15 is serrated as at 17, this serrated member meshing with the gear 12 when the latter is arranged within the slot 15. In practice, the parts are associated in a manner illustrated in Fig. 1, the top being supported in an upright position by means of the finger engaging element 13. By withdrawing the element let away from the top with a quick motion while the top is supported in an upright position by means of the finger engaging element 13, the spinning motion is imparted to the top as will be readily understood. The parts are designed to permit the toy to be used by very young children, and also designed to stand rough treatment as few parts will be broken or mutilated.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the body 10 of the top is provided with a plurality of studs 19 which project from the body at suitable points, and any number of these studs may be used. Mounted on each stud is a fan 20, these fans being loosely mounted and susceptible of rotation when the top is spun. it will be noted that the fan is rotated in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the top, so as to present a very attractive appearance to the toy, and to provide for the amusement of young children.
lVhile it is believed that from the fore going description, the nature and advantages ofthe invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the details shown,
and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is A top including a body portion, a stem rising from the upper end thereof, a finger engaging element swiveled on said stem, studs projecting from the said body at diametrically opposite points, and fans loosely mounted on said studs and adapted to rotaste in a bearing opposite to the bearing of rotation of the top. 7
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
MELVIN o. STEEN.
