DUST-SHIELD FOR BEARINGS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 19-19.
Application filed April 9, 1918. Serial No. 227,583.
v ments .in Dust-Shields for Bearings, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the-accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to {improvements in disk-shaped dust shield for'ba ll-bearings, roller-bearings and other bearings, of that class, which are mounted on the ends of the inner ring or the outer ring or on the frame of the bearing.
Figures 1 and 2 in the accompanying drawing show in a cross section and in a side view respectively a dust shield arranged in accordance with this invention. Figs. 3 and 4 show in a longitudinal section and in a side view respectively a ball-bearing provided with dust shields arranged in accordance with the invention.
The ring shaped dust shield 1 shown in the drawing is comparatively thin and made of metal or any other suitable rigid material. According to the drawing the inner diameter of the ring is adapted to the inner ring 2 of the bearing, so that the shield can embrace the said ring 2 and fits as closely as possible to the same. The outer edge of the shield 1 is beveled and adapted to be brought into engagen'ient with a correspondingly shaped groove 3 provided in the outer ring 4 of the bearing the depth of which groove increases toward the center plane of the outer ring 4. Iii-order to render it possible to introduce the shield into the groove 3 a number (four in the drawing) of notches 5 are provided in the inner edge of the ring 4, preferably at the same distance from one another, which notches extend to the groove In the outer edge of the shield 1 substan tially radial slots 6 are provided, corresponding to the notches 5. The points of the adjacent corners 7 formed by the said slots 6 are somewhat bent in opposite directions, so that the shield has substantially the shape of a ground-auger.
For. the mounting of the shield into the outer ring 4 of the bearing the ring 1 is located with one of its sides against the ring 4 and with the slots 6 located at the side of the notches 5, the shield 1 being then rotated by means of a pin spanner, en-
gaging holes 8 provided in the ring 1, in 1 such ment with one of the edges of the radial notches 5 respectively and the ring 1 is screwed into the outer ring of the bearing, while the shield 1 is rotated. The shield l is rotated, until all the corners have entered the slot 3. For the removing of the shield 1 from the bearing for instance for the locating of one or more fresh balls into the same, the shield 1 is rotated in opposite direction, so that the points of the other set of corners 7 engage the opposite edges of the notches 5 provided in the ring 4 and the shield 1 is screwed out of engagement with the slot 3 of the ring 5. In order .to-facilitate the engagement of the corners-7 with the edges of the notches 5, the said edges are beveled at the inner and outer sides respectively. In the drawing ring-shaped dust shields are provided at both sides of the ball-bearing. If the inner ring of the bearing is not adjustable transversely or is not able to swing laterally as the ring 2 of the bearing shown in the drawing, the inner ring may be provided with grooves adapted to receive the ring-shaped dust shields respectively, or both rings of the bearing may be provided with slots for the said purpose.
The ring-shaped dust shields described above may be used in ball-bearings of any type and in roller bearings and in bearings generally. In some cases a disk arranged in the same manner as the ring may be substituted for the same. The dust shield may evidently be fixed to the frame of a bearing arranged in accordance with the ring 4. If the shield 1 is sufliciently thin, the edge of the same need not be beveled.
Having now; described my invention, what I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. 'In a ball-bearing, roller-bearing or bearing of any other type, the combination of a disk-shaped dust shield provided in its edge with substantially radial slots, the corners at the said slots being bent laterally, a
rection, that the points of one set' of the corners 7 are brought into engager' BEST AVAIILABLE COPY peripheral groove provided in the bearing, and notches extending from the bearing to the said groove, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a ball-bearing, roller-bearing or bearing of any other type, the combination of a ring-shaped dust shield provided in one of its edges With substantially radial slots, adjacent corners at the said slots being bent laterally in opposite directions, a peripheral 10 In witness whereof I have hereunto signed 15 my name.
CARL J OHAN WESTMAN.
