JOHN s. EDDY, or LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
MEANS FOR HOLDING COVERS ON BEDS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed August 5, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN S. EDDY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Means for Holding Covers on Beds and the like, of which the-following is a specification.
My invention relates to and has for a primary object the provision of means referably attachable to the mattress where y the ends of the bed covers at the foot of the bed may be firmly held in position thereon, the arrangement being such that the comfort of the occupant of the bed will be greater than otherwise and in no wise impaired by the use of the attaching means.
A further object is to provide means extending across the entire width of the mattress at the end whereby the ends of the covers may be firmly clamped thereagainst and between the rolls of the mattress which are usually provided at the top and bottom edges, together with means attached to the sides of the mattress whereby the means on the ends of the mattress may be removably attached thereto. Other objects will appear as the description progresses.
Referring to the drawing of my invention, in which similar characters of reference are employed for indicating the same and like parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bed and mattress showing the use of my cover holding means thereon.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section of the end of the mattress and covers showing the main attaching member.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the means carried by the mattress for connection with the main attaching member, whereby the latter may be held in position.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the said main attaching member.
As clearly shown in the drawings, especially in Fig. 1, my device comprises a main attaching or holdin member 10 having the form of a bar an a length of about the same as the width of the mattress 11, and a strap, as at 12, adapted to be suitably sewed or otherwise attached to the side edges of the mattress, hooks of wire ,or the-like, as at 13, being attached as shown to the straps 12, over wh1ch cords 14 are stretched. The ends 14 of the cords 14 are extended through perforations 15 in the ends of the main member Specification of Letters l atent.

10; and tied with but a single knot, preferably, so that the loops of the cords may be hooked over the loops 16 of the hooks 13.
It will be observed that the under coverings 17, 18 and 19 are held firmly against the end of the mattress by means of the main bar member 10, this bar being preferably positioned between the rolled edges 11 and 11 of the mattress and the under coverings are forced into firm contact with the mattress thereby and will ordinarily be held against accidental removal. The outer covering, or counterpane 20, extends downwardly over the sides and foot of the bed as usual and covers the member 1, so that this member need not be of ornamental character.
In use, the under coverings are first pulled down over the foot of the mattress, the bar 10 is then positioned thereagainst, the cords 14 looped over the hooks 13 and the ends of the cords then tied so that a proper tension may be placed on the cords to insure against the untying of the cords and the removal or loosening of the holding bar 10.
It will be apparent that my device may be modified substantially from the form shown and that the manner of attachment to the mattress may be altered within the scope of the appended claims without enlargin the scope or departing from the spirit 0 my invention.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. In a bed clothes holder, the combination with a mattress, of attaching members secured to the opposite edges of said mat tress near one end, a rigid bar extending across the end of said mattress and adapted to lie between the upper and lower edges thereof, and means on the ends of said bar and adapted to be secured to said attaching members, for frictionally holding said bar in position on the mattress.
2. In a bed clothes holder, the combination with a mattress and bed clothes thereon, of a bar positioned at the end and between the upper and lower surfaces of said mattress, and cooperating attaching members carried on the ends of said bar and the sides of said mattress, whereby said bar may be frictionally held on said mattress, said bar serving to hold the clothes firmly against the end of said mattress.
3. In a bed clothes holder, the combination with a mattress and bed clothes thereof, of straps attached to the edges of said mattress 7 Copies .of .thisvpatentmay be ob'tained'tor near one end, a bar extending across the end of said mattress between the upper andlower a sides thereof, the ends=othe bed-clothes-be ing extended between the end of said mattress and said bar,' and means on" the endsfof"" said bar for removably holding said bar in contact with said bed clothes, said means being attachable to said straps.
4. A bed clothes holder Comprising, in combination With a mattress and bedding thereon attaching 1 members secured to the opposite edges of'said m'attressand at one endfthereof; a bar extending across the end edge 6f said mattress and adapted to hold said bedding 'thereagainst, and means on the 15 five cents eachybyiaddressing. ,t he Commissionersofz r'atenti, I washington l). 0311 e
