Description

WATCHCASE.
APPLICATION man ocrI s. 1911.
1,289, 1 55, Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
yawn/Z To all whom 'it may concern:
UNITED sai-artis ir carica,
JOSEH A. GOAL, OF WARREN, PNNSYLVNLL WA TCHCASE.
Be it known that I, Jossrn A. Goan, citizen of the United States, residing at Warren, in the county of iVarren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lvatchcases: and I do hereby declare the following' to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the iuve-ntion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in watch cases or containers and particularly to cases of the. type employed in connection with a strap or chain for seciiring the device to a persons'wrist.
The principal object ot' my invention is to provide a case of this character, which can be used with an ordinary watch not, designed particulz'lrly for wrist wear. and which will firmly hold the watch without permitting' any part thereof to protrude beyond the case or container.
A further object is to provide a case which will be both' 'dust-proof and n1oisturc.-pro1'',-
so that the mechanism ot' the watch will be preserved and will not be'hable to disorders caused by rust or dust.
A still further object is to provide the case with a. yielding' pad against which the watch is retained by a ring' or tlange,5which bears on the face ot' the watch. By this construction, blows or jars on the watch case will be absorbed by the. pad and will not be transmitted to the watch.
With the foregoing objects outlined and with other objects in yiew, which will ap pear as the nature ofthe invention is better lunderstood, my invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed ont in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
'Figure 1 shows perspective views of the watch case top or lid, a watch, and the body portion of the watch case.
Fig. 2 is a. vertical sectional view of the Watch case showing a watch, in dotted lines` within the same.
Fig. 3 is atop plan view of the body portion of the case, showing,r a. watch within the i same.

made of any suitable rigid' material, and is provided near its upper edge with a shoulder 2, for a purpose hereinafter described. in annular vertical projection -3 extends from the body portion and is provided on its periphery with screw threads Extending downwardly and inwardly from the projection 3 is an annular flangeI 5, which is preferably of a width equal to the length of a watch stein G of a watch 7, that is to be housed within the case. The flange is cut away, as shown at 8 to accommodate Vthe watch stein and it ina-y also be cnt away at other points, as shown at 9, to accommodate other projections from the watch, if neces'- sary. A padri@ of yielding material is iocated in the bottom of the body portion. upon which the watch rests with its back engaging the pad and-its stein occupies a position in the eut away portion 8 of the flange. it will be apparent from the foregoingi that. the' body portion of the case is of snilicient diameter to encircle the rim et the watch, thatl the opening formed by the tlangfe is oi' practically the saine diameter as the watch,
and that the seating7 oi the stem G in the threads 12 to be screwed onto the. screw; vthreads of the body port-ion, t'or the purpose,
ot bringing; the lower edge oi the cover into contact. with the shonider 2 and providea dust, and moisture-proof joint between the body portion 'and cover. The cover has a, crystal 13 to permit inspection of the face ot' the watch and a tiange lli: extends downwardly and inwardly from the underside of the cover, and has its' lower edgre i5 restino; on the face ofthe watch to hold the watch on the pad l0. As the cover is screwed onf'o the body portion, the lower edge of theA Harige 14 will engage the face ot' the watch4 and gradually force the watch downwardly against the pressure of the pad, so that' shocks administered to the case will not be transmitted to the watch. r
If the watch is to be worn upon the wrist, the body portion may be provided with sta ples i6 to receive the strap or chain nsed inH securingf the case to the wrist.
When it is desired to wind or set the watch, the cover 11 may be nnscrewed and the watch withdrawn from the case.
