Specication of Letters Patent.l
Patented oeaa, 1917.
Application filed March 6, 1917. Serial No. 152,764.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. DENMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nicholasville, in the county of Jessamine and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.v
This invention relates to toys characterized by a movable ligure, which in the present instance is a trapeze performer, and it is the object of the invention to provide a simple and amusing toy of this kind which may be manipulated to cause the figure to turn somersaults.
With the object stated in view, the invention consists of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspectlve view of the toy, and
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Referring specically to the drawing, 5 denotes a base board which supports the toy, and from this board rise, to a suitable height, two laterally spaced uprights 6 supporting at their upper ends a shaft 7 having one end provided with a hand crank 8. The shaft extends between the uprights and the latter have bearing apertures in which the shaft is journaled. From the shaft 7 is suspended a trapeze bar 9, said bar being carried by the ends of two laterallyl spaced wires 10 xed to the shaft. Thus it will be seen that when the shaft is rocked by means of the hand crank 8, the trapeze bar is swung back and forth.
On the trapcze bar 9 is mounted a jointed gure representing a trapeze performer composed of a body portion 11 having jointed arms 12 and legs 13. The bar 9 passes straight through the body portion 11 of the figure, and said figure is balanced on the bar so that it is normally in upright position. The figure is pivoted on the trapeze bar so that it is free to revolve, the bar passing loosely-through the body portion 11.
Below the trapeze bar 9, a cross rod 14C extends between the uprights 6, said cross rod being positioned to intercept the ligure carried by the trapeze bar, and serving asan abutment to cause the same to revolve.
In operation, the trapeze bar 9 is swung to and fro by means of the hand crank 8, and when the igure carried by the .bar strikes the cross rod 14, it makes a complete turn, simulating the movement of a trapeze performer turning a somersault.
I claim 1. A toy comprising a figure, a swinging support on which said gure is free to revolve, and an abutment in the path of the ligure for causing the same to revolve when striking the abutment.
2. A toy comprising a pair of laterally spaced uprights, a transverse shaft carried by the uprights, a trapeze bar suspended from the shaft to swing when said shaft is rocked, a figure pivotally mounted on the trapeze bar, and an abutment in the path of the figure for causing the same to revolve when striking the abutment.
3. A toy comprising `a pair of laterally spaced uprights, a transverse shaft carried by the uprights,` a trapeze bar suspended from the shaft to swng'when said shaft is rocked, a figure pivotally mounted on the trapeze bar, and a cross bar extending be# tween the uprights and positioned to intercept the figure and to revolve the same when 'l struck thereby.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CHARLESF. DENMAN.
