Prrrnlv'r OFFICE.
THOMAS PROSSER, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN COKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,082, dated February 27, 1&72.
Specification describing a new and improved Water-Cock, invented by THOMAS PRossER, of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York.
This invention Will be first fully described and then clearly pointed out in the claim.
The drawing is a sectional elevation of my improved cock.
The Water-passage A leads into a chamber, B, preferably at the under side of the cock, which chamber ha-s a valve-seat, D, at the top, around a passage, E, by which the Water escapes from said chamber to the nozzle F. The said chamber opens downward, and is closed Water-tight with aplug, G, and a packing-ring, H. I is a valve in said chamber, on a pushpin or stem, K, extending up through the cock and a packing-box, L, While the lower end eX- tends into a guiding-socket, M, in the inner end ofthe plug' G. In the packing-box L is a seat, Whereon is a packing-ring', N, of exible material, with a metal Washer, P, above, Which are clamped down on the seat bythe inner end of the gland Q screwing into the packing-box, land expanding the elastic packin g-ring against the stem K, but not so as to cause it to bind and prevent said stem from Working freely. The valve-stem is enlarged at R, just above the packing-ring N, when the valve is closed but when the valve is pushed down for opening, the said enlarged part comes down to the ring and packs so tight with it as to prevent the escape of water up through the gland Q, and when the valve closes air will be admitted through gland Q and ring N to the Water in the nozzle. F, and thus prevent it being retained in said nozzle by atmospheric action, as in the other cocks. Above the Washer Pis a light spring, S, contracted by a nut, T, to raise the valve before the Water will act on it; also to close it in case the Water is shutoff' the pipes, and above thenut T is athumb or pushpiece, U, by Which to press the valve open. The said nut T is also used to adjust the tension of the spring. The essential object of this cock is to have a practicable self-closing cock, and thus guard against Wastin g of the Water and damage by ilooding the rooms when accidentallyleft open. It is alike useful forbarrels, casks, and the like, but it is mainly designed for use on water-service pipes.4
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat.- ent- The combination of the elastic packing-ring N With the stem K, having the enlargement R arranged for closing with said ring, When the valve is opened to prevent the escape ot' water through the gland, all substantially as specied.
