1. 1.- HOLTMEYERL TABLE CAP.
APPHCATION man OCT. 1a, 1913. 1,240,208., Patented Sept. 18, 1917.

TABLE-CAP.
Application filed October 18, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. HOLTMEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Table-Caps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to removable caps for use upon tables and the like.
The object of my invention is to provide a leatherette or imitation leather table cap or cover which is intended for ordinary use upon highly finished and polished table tops to prevent scratching, marring or damaging of the same and which can be conveniently placed thereon or removed therefrom, also one which will not slip out of position upon the table or off 'of the same and one which is neat in appearance and protects the table from all sorts of rough usage.
My invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement as herein set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, whichserves to illustrate the construction, application and use of my invention:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device inverted;
Fig. 2 is a view of the same in position upon a table top; I
Fig. 3 is'a cross-section of the'device.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated, and which shows a preferred construction, my improved table cap or cover comprises the horizontal body 2 and the vertical band 8. These two parts are preferably both made of the same kind of ma terial, such as leatherette or imitation leather or similar material having an outwardly non-woven and substantially impervious structure. The band 3 is made by folding the upper edge 4: inwardly and downwardly, and also preferably by forming a hem 5 upon the lower edge of the band. The ends of the band are turned under and stitched together, so that the band is continuous, as its name implies.
The body 2 has its edge part turned down substantially at right angles all around, thus forming a flange 6 which projects far enough below the lower surface of the body 1 to effectively engage with the edge of the table top and prevent horizontal shifting of the cap without any extraneous fastening means. This flap 6 fits inside the upper Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 796,023.
for the purpose of my invention, which is designed to protect tables used under conditions where leather-topped tables would not be available on account of their expensiveness.
While I have illustrated my invention as applied to a round table to it will be apparent that by slight modifications it may be adapted to any shape of top such as square, octagonal or any polygonal shape of table top, the essential feature of the construction being that the outwardly nonwoven substantially impervious body 1 be provided with a downwardly extending flange adapted to snugly fit the edges of the table top.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
As a new and improved article of manufacture, a table cap comprising a single thickness of flexible material of outwardly nonwoven and substantially impervious structure, forming a'horizontal body having a vertically downwardly disposed integral flange extending continuously around its edge and adapted to snugly fit all around the edge of a table top and hold the cap in place on said top against horizontal displacement without anyv extraneous fastening means, a vertically disposed band of material like that of said body, having its ends secured together whereby it is continuous, and having an inwardly and down wardly turned upper edge part, and secured to said flange of said body by a continuous seam therearound through the band and its turned-down part and said flange, whereby there is formed a reinforcement to said cap all around the edge of said body.
