Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 3t), 1991?.
Application filed May 17, 1916. Serial No. 98,077.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SENECA Kn'r'rnLL, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Scituate, in the county of Providence, State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Plate and Pan Lifter; and I do hereby declare the following to be .a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved pie plate and pan lifter and an object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind, which is simple, efficient and practical in construction, and comprises improved features of design.
()ne of the features of the invention is the provision of a main wire frame having a forwardly positioned downwardly extending loop part to engage one side of the pan or the like, in combination with a sliding frame, slidable on the sides of the main frame and being spring tensioned relatively toward said downwardly extending part, to hold the downwardly extending loop portion against a diametrically opposite side of the pan or the like, whereby the pan may be moved from one place to another.
In practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved pie plate and pan lifter constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken just in front of the handle 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the sliding frame.
Referring more especially to the drawings 1 designates the handle, and 2 the main frame, which is constructed of suitable wire material, and comprises the sides 3, having their rear end portions bent at right angles to the sides and toward each other as shown at 3 and secured in the handle as shown at 4. The forward portions of the sides are turned into eyes 5, and beyond the eyes merge into the downwardly extending loop, designed to engage one side of a pan or pie plate. A transverse wire member 6 having a central eye 7 is provided, and its ends are provided with eyes to engage the eyes 5. A sliding frame 8 is provided, which is also constructed of wire material and consists of the sides 9, which are substantially parallel with the sides of the main frame, and have their forward ends terminating in eyes 10, which receive and slide on the sides of the main frame. The sides 9 near the rear are formed into eyes 11, to be engaged by the eyes 12 of the transverse wire member 13, which is provided with the central eye 14. Secured in the eye 14 is one end of a coil spring 15, the other end of which is secured in the eye 7 thereby holding the second frame (which is slidable), so that its forward. eyes will contact with the eyes 5, thereby limiting the second frame in its slidable forward position. The sides 9 of the second frame to the rear of the eyes 11, are turned into eyes 16, which receive and slide on the sides of the main frame. Beyond the eyes 16 the wire material of the sides 9 extend downwardly and merge into a loop 17, to engage a pie plate or pan diametrically opposite where the first down wardly extending loop engages, whereby the pan may be lifted from one place to another.
It will be seen that the eyes, formed where the depending loop adjoins the horizontal members on both the supplemental and main frames, tend to strengthen the frames at the point where the loops depend. Any strain that will tend to bend the loops with respect to the horizontal members of the frames will tend to bend them away from each other as a result of the work that they are called upon to perform. The eyes formed at the junction of these loops and the horizontal members are formed in such a way as to best resist the strain. The eyes formed on the main frame are made so that the natural strain will tend to close them, while the equivalent eyes on the supplemental frame are similarly formed but in being turned to engage the horizontal members of the main frame, give additional strength to the depending member of the supplemental frame enabling it to better withstand the strains to which it is subjected, for the horizontal membershook over the depending members at a point just below where the eye is formed.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A pie pan or plate lifter comprising a frame having parallel wire sides and terminating in a forwardly positioned depend ing loop to engage one side of the pie-plate, a handle for the main frame, eyes formed at the point where the, loop depends, a strengthening piece connected between these eyes and provided at its center for connection With a spring, a supplemental frame similar to the mainframe-but omitting the handle, eyes in the supplemental frame at the extreme end of the horizontal member and atthe junction of the horizontal and depending member, said eyes being adapted to slide over the parallel members of the main frame, other'eyes' formed near the junction of the 4 horizontal anddepending member of the' supplement'al frame, a strengthening piececonnecting thelast named eyes and adapted .to receive a spring at its center and a sprlng tens oning'v means for drawing the depending'loop's toward each other.
2. A pia an or plate-lifter comprising a frame having parallel wire sides and terminating in: a' forwardly positioned dependinglocpto engageone side of the pie plate, a: handle. for; the main frame, eyes at the point where theloop depends, said eyes being so formed that the naturalstrain on the loop willtend to close them, astrengthening piece connected between these eyes'and provided at its center for connection with a spring, a supplemental frame similar to the main frame but omitting the handle, eyes in the supplemental frame at the extreme end of its horizontal members, eyes at the junction of the horizontal and depending members of said supplemental frame so formed that the horizontal members hook around the depending legs of the loop and pass below the horizontal members of the main frame in forming them thus enablingthe depending loop of which they are a part to better Withstand the strain of its work all of. these said eyes being adapted to slide over. the parallel members of the main frame, other eyes formed near the junction ofthe horizontal-1f and depending members of SAMUEL E.
