To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, \VILLIAM H. HAM- MOND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clifford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle Connections, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain improve ments in handle connections and hasrelation more particularly to a device of this general character to be employed in connection with farming implements; and the object of my invention is to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved means whereby a connection may be effected with the handle possessing a maximum of efficiency.

The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved handle connection whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.

In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, illustrating a handle connection constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device as illustrated in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, H denotes a handle of predetermined dimensions, to one extremity of which is adapted to be secured a ferrule F, and it is to be observed that the ferrule F is disposed on a predetermined taper whereby the outer end portion thereof terminates beyond the adjacent extremity of the handle H. The ferrule F is provided with an extension 1 having adjacent its outer end an opening 2 while the longitudinal marginal portions 3 of said extension are disposed in substantial parallelism whereby the same may snugly overlie and engage the flattened side portions 5 of the shank 6. The shank 6 may form a part of a hoe, a fork or any other implement, as I wish to be particularly understood as not limiting myself in any way as to the exact character of the device with which my improved connection is employed. The upper face of the shank 6 is provided with a laterally disposed threaded member 7 adapted to be disposed through the opening 2 in the extension 1 and said extension 7 is adapted to be engaged by the nut or bur 8 whereby it will be seen that the shank 6 may be effectively maintained in operative engagement with the ferrule. It is also to be observed that the distance between the threaded extension 7 and the free extremity of the shank 6 is such as to permit the free end portion of the shank to be inserted within the outer end of the ferrule, and it is to be further observed that the free end portion of the shank 6 is curved, as at 9, to afford a protuberance in order to assure a contact with the portion of the interior of the ferrule in alinement with the extension 1. It is to be further observed that the opposite portion of the free extremity of the shank 6 is rounded, as indicated at 10, in order to facilitate the insertion of the shank 6 within the ferrule F.

From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a handle connec tion constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice.

I claim:

1. In combination, a handle member having a ferrule secured to one extremity thereof and projecting therebeyond, an extension carried by the ferrule, the longitudinal marginal portions thereof being disposed in parallelism, an implement provided with a shank having opposite sides flattened and positioned between the parallel marginal portions of the extension of the ferrule, said shank having its free extremity projected Withinthe outer end of the ferrule, a laterally disposed extension carried bythe shank of the implement intermediate the length thereof, the extension of the ferrule being, provided with an opening through Which the extension of the shank isv directed, and

a clamping means coacting With the exten-' point opposite to the extension of'the fer' rule.

2. In combination, a handle member having a ferrule secured to one extremity thereof and projecting therebeyond, an extension carried by the ferrule, the longitudinal marginal portions thereof being disposed in parallelism, an implement provided With a shank having opposite sides flattened and positioned between the parallel marginal portions of the extension of the ferrule, said shank having its free extremity projected Within the outer end of the ferrule, a laterally disposed extension carried by the shank .of the implement intermediate the length thereof, the extension of the ferrule being provided With. an opening through which the extension of the shank is directed, and

a-clamping means coacting With the extension of the shank and the extension of the ferrule, the outer extremity of-Hthe shank being provided With a protuberance to contact With the inner Wall of the ferrule at a point opposite to the extension of the ferrule, the opposite side of the extremity of the shankbeing rounded to facilitate the insertion of the shank Within theferrule.
