GAME APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FREDERICK E. DoRR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Game Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to game apparatus of that type in which the game is played by snapping one or more small disks or counters from one part of a board or playing space to another, and has particular reference to the counters employed in game apparatus of this sort and to the parts used in snapping these counters, the nature and object of my improvements being hereinafter explained in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a diagrammatic illustration, in plan view, of a game-board suitable for use in playing a game of the character above referred to; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a support from which a disk or counter may be snapped; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the disk employed as preferably constructed, Fig. 4 is a central transverse section through the same; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the piece employed for snapping the disk.

In Fig. 1 of the drawings, 2 indicates a game-board having a number of spaces 3 marked thereon, into one or another of which spaces the disk or counter hereinafter described is to be snapped by the players from one or more predetermined starting points. In an actual game-board each of the spaces 3 will contain a description of or reference to some play or move in the game intended to be played, which may be based upon any one of such games as base-ball, foot-ball, tennis, golf, cricket, etc. The game-board may also be provided, if desired, with various accessories adapted for use in playing a particular game. For example, it may be provided at any desired point or points with a removable obstacle 4, representative of the goal posts in a football game, or of the tennis net in the tennis game, or of a bunker or other hazard in a golf game, over which obstacle the dlsk may be snapped at appropriate times during the play.

I am not the first to devise a game apparatus having the general characteristics above described, but it has been a serious objection to prior apparatus of this char- Specification of Letters Patent.

acter that the disk would slide so far after striking the board as practically to nullify any amount of skill which might be employed by theplayers in snapping the disk in a desired direction and with a proper amount of force to land it in a desired space.

This enables a player who is sufficiently skilful to promote his game by causing the disk to land and stop in one of the spaces 3 which indicates a desirable play. The presence of the pads 6 also results in causing the disk 5 to be tilted at a definite angle when snapped by applying pressure to its edge in the usual manner, and thus gives it a higher trajectory which not only assists in jumping the disk over an obstacle but also causes it to drop in a more nearly vertical direction, thereby still further diminishing any tendency of the disk to slide on the board. Preferably the friction pads 6 are provided by a soft rubber button having a somewhat greater thickness than the disk 5 and also having between its flat faces a connecting portion of less diameter, which is received within a corresponding perforation in said disk.

The disk 5 is preferably snapped from a resilient cushion consisting of a circular pad 7 of felt or the like, which may be moved from one part of the game-board to another, in case the nature of the game is such that the disk 5 should be snapped from different points on the game-board under various circumstances. Fig. 2 shows the pad 7 secured to the top of a sheet metal base 8 having an extension 9 bent to form an upwardly-extending portion 10, serving as a handle. The disk 5 is snapped from the pad 7 by means of a larger disk 11, Fig. 5, such as is commonly employed in game apparatus of this character.

It will be seen that by the use of the playing pieces above described it becomes possible to utilize a game-board having an ordinary printed paper surface without subjecting the players to the disadvantage of having the disk or counter slide thereon when played, thus obviating certain objections such as increased bulk and cost which are incident to the provision of a playing surface constructed of or-faced With a friction material such as felt or the like, as has been proposed. It Will also be evident that'the disk with friction pads on its faces and the movable supporting cushion may be employed for playing a great variety of games on any suitable game-board or other surface.

I claim:
