Description
[JOHN KELLER AND NATHANPEL snnnnn, or' ,HAennsfrown,
f MARYLAND.
Letters Patent No. 112,354, dated'March 7, `1871.
' fEIIhe' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maldngpart of the samer- To `all whom it 'may conce/rai: i
Be it known that we, JoHN-RKELLER 'and 'Na- THANIEL SEHNER, oi' d Hagerstown, in-thecounty of Washington and Stateot Maryland, have invented al certain new and useful Improvement in Door-Knobs;
and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of the same, andin whichi t Figure 1 represents alongitudinal section of-my invention which is applied to an ordinary lock and door;
' knob with an annular flange, which fits loosely within acorrespondiug recess formed in the rose of the knob, in combination with a plate, suitably attached to the rose-plate, and constructedV with a hollow shank or' cylinder, which is 'supplied with a screw-thread, workging in the `screw-thread of the spindle of the opposite knob, substantially as hereinafter set fortnand claimed.
C To enable those skilled in the art to which my in-A ventionappertains to makeand use the same, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
- 1n the annexed drawing- A is an ordinary lock; and B, the door; A Y G C are knobs, attached to the Shanks D D' of the lockA.'l l A 'lhe shank D is madehollow to receive oneend of the spindle E ofthe shank )aud is constructed withan annular tiange, d, which 'ts loosely within a recess constructed inthe rose-plate F', as seen in iig. l. y
'Gr designates a plategwith a hollow-shank, g, which screws on the spindle'E.
rlhe plate G is set in a recess in the rose-plate F,
anni eine' naar cfm and secured thereto b y means of rivets or other suit- I The object vof -so constructing the parts above described, forming my invention, is to admit of the latter being applied to doors of various thicknesses with accuracy, without the' assistance of a screw or other fastening passing through the shank of'the knob and thence into the spindle, for holding it in place, when so applied, which will .be more fully apparent from the following'. v l It will be observed that when it is desired to gradnate the-distance between the lock A and the 'roseplate'F, to adapt my invention to the thickness of the door to which it isto be applied, the rose-plate F to fit closely against the door, to be placed at any de-V sired point, making robin for the reception of the door'.
'.lhe use of a screw, in holding the shank ofthe knob npon'itsA spindle, it will be seen, is here dispensed with, as its place is filled by the plate G, with the hollow screw-threaded shank g.-
` Having thus described our invention, What We claim, and desire to secnrelby Letters Patent, is A .The plate, provided with a screw-threaded cylindrical apertnre and the rose-plate, constrnctediin two parts, and so connected as to revolve together, in combination with the ltlanged shank of the knob and the spindle, substantially as shown and described.O
In testimony that we' claim the foregoingas our in- .ve'ntion we hereunto sign our nainesras joint inventors,. in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 20th day oi'January, A. D. 1871.
" f ,JOHNR KELLER.
