TAKE-UP-CONTROLLING MEANS FOR EMBROIDERING-MACHINES.
1,1o1,oo2.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 23, 1914.
Original application filed June 1-7, 1912, Serial No. 704,104. Divided and this application filed January 6, 1913. Serial No. 740,388.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROBERT ZAHN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Plauen, Vogtland, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Take-Up-Controlling Means for Embroidering-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This application is a division from my application Serial No. 70%,104, filed June 17 1912. The subject thereof relates to embroidering machines havin special function apparatus as such for making button hole edge stitches, known as festoon apparatus, and more particularly, to means for imparting positive motion to the take up levers during ordinary embroidering.
In embroidering machines with, for instance, festoon apparatus, the take up motion for festooning differs from that of ordinary embroidering. It is well known that hitherto when the mechanism for operating the take up levers comprises separate cams and levers, it has been impossible to change from festooning to ordinary embroider-ing and vice versa without removing the corresponding levers from their respective cams.
It isthe object of the present invention to provide an apparatus whereby the change. from a speclal function to ordinary embrold ering and vice versa can be effected while the engagement of the levers with the cams is constantly maintained.
My invention is diagrammatically illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts.
In the drawing 1 denotes the main shaft of the machine on which two cams 2 and 2 consisting of disks having cam shaped projections are fixed. These cams serve to operate the take up levers for ordinary embroidering.
5 denotes the shaft on which the cam 6 for operating the take up levers for festooning or any other special function is fixed. The bell crank lever S operated by said cam 6 and carrying the roller 7 is pivotally connected to the rod 15 of the take up levers t. The cams 2 and 2 operate a bell crank lever 4 of which one arm carries a roller 3 which rolls on the cam 2 and the other arm of which is pivotally connect its free end carries a roller 20 adapted to convstantly roll on the counter-cam 2 and which i In the position shown the levers 4 and 19 are coupled and are acted upon simulta'neously by the cams 2 and 2 whereby the take up levers t are positively operated for ordinary embroidering. tVhen it is desired to change from this operation to a special function, as for instance, festooning, the pinis displaced so as to disengage the projection 4 and to thereby release the lever 19'. By setting in mot-i011 the shaft 5 of the festooning cam 6, the lever 8 will be acted upon by the latter and in conjunction with the action of lever & impart to the take up levers 2,, the motion necessary for festooning. The cam 6 will thus modify or, soto say, correct the motion of the lever 4.
i It will be seen that the take up motion for festooning" is not positive, but in view of the considerably reduced speed of the machine .this is not necessary.
lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. An embroidering mechanism, comprising take up levers, a cam mechanism positively operating said levers for ordinary embroidering, a second cam mechanism, and means whereby the said two cam mechanisms can be caused to work in conjunction to modify the take up operation efi'ected by the first named cam mechanism by the second cam mechanism to produce a special function.
2. An embroidering machine, comprising take up levers, a cam, motion transmitting means positively actuated by said cam for ordinary embroidering, a second cam, means connected to said motion transmitting means and adapted at times to be actuated by said second cam, and means whereby for special function, the said two cams can be caused to work in conjunction to modify by said second cam the take up operation effected by the first named cam without disconnecting. the said motion transmitting means from the latter.
3. In an embroidering machine, take up levers, a cam mechanism for ordinary embroidering, motion transmitting means comprising two levers positively actuated by said cam mechanism, a second cam, means connected to said motion transmitting means and adapted at times to be actuated by said second cam, said two levers being capable of being uncoupled from one another so that for special function the take up operation effected by said first cam mechanism may be modified without disconnecting said motion transmitting means from said first named cam mechanism.
4-. In an embroidering machine, take up levers, a cam mechanism for ordinary embroidering, motion transmitting means, comprisin two levers positively actuated by said cam mechanism, a second cam, means connected to said motion transmitting means and adapted at times to be actuated by said second cam and coupling means intervening between said two levers, whereby for special function the said two levers may be uncoupled so that the take up operation effected by said first cam mechanism may be modified by said second cam without disconnection of the motion transmitting means from said first cam mechanism.
5. In an embroidering machine, take up levers, a cam mechanism, comprising two coaxially connected cams for ordinary embroidering, motion transmitting means including two levers positively actuated by said cams, a third cam, means connected to said motion transmitting means and adapted at times to be actuated by said third cam, said two levers being capable of being uncoupled from one another so that ting lever positively actuated by one of said cams, a lever actuated by the second cam and capable of being coupled to and uncoupled from the said first lever, a third cam and a third lever connected to said first named lever and adapted at times to be actuated by said third cam, said third cam being adapted during special function to modify the take up operation effected by the said first named cam.
7. In an embroidering machine, take up levers, two coaXially connected cams, a mo tion transmitting lever positively actuated by one of said cams, a lever actuated. by said second cam, coupling means between said two levers, a third cam and a third lever connected to said first named lever and adapted at times to be actuated by said third cam, said third cam being adapted during special function and on the uncoupling of the first named two levers to modify the take up operation elfected by the said first named cam.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT ZAHN.
