Patented Aug. 19, w13.
i er/ Be it known that I, LoUIs' 'UNITED STATES PATENT" OFFICE. N
LOUIS COEN, OF 'VICTOIL LONDONQENGLAND.
SMOKE-FILTER FOR CIGARETTES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented ug.. 19, 1913.. Application led April 25, 191.21. Serial No. 623,198.
To all lwhom zt may concern:
COEN, of 316 Vauxhall Bridge road, Victoria, London,
England, cigarette manufacturer, have inventedvnew and useful Improvements /Relating to Smoke-Filters for Cigarettes; and
I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being hadv to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention has reference to improve-V ments in or relating to means for filtering or purifying smoke passing through cigarettes, Vcigars and the like and has for its object to do away to a large extent with the evils attending the habit of smoking.
In carrying my invention -into practice I employ a piece of linen or silk as the'filtering medium which may be stiiened or not as desired and which'can'be inserted as adisk for example in such a manner that the smoke must pass through same in order to enter the mouth. Means are, also provided whereby the linen or like filtering materialv is retained in osition. In all forms of my invention the ter is placed abo t th (one' eighth) of an inch from the d of cigarette or cigar thus preventing vthe juice of the tobacco from touching the tongue or lip. And in order that my invention may be readily understood and carried into efi'ect I will 'now proceed to describe the same fully for which purpose reference is to be had to the accompanying Vdrawings in which Figure 1 isa sectional view of my invention as applied to cigarettes. Fig. 2 illustrates my invention as applied to cigars.
In allthe figures the parts are exaggerated in tsize in order to better illustrate the invention.
. Referring now to the invention as shown` in Fig.' I a indicates the filling of tobacco and b a cigarette paper which as shown envelops'the cardboard' mouth` piece c. The filtering material which may be of linen mouth piece by an appropriate instrumentV thus causing the filtering material to take up the position shown in Fig. 2, the cardboard rlng acting to retain the fabric e in position. v
Of course itwill be understood that the arrangement above described may be reversed that is to sa the ring d may be placed on the other side of the filtering ma terial'in which case the said'filteringmaterial will assume the reverse position as shown by the 'dotted lines in Fig. 1.
In applying my invention to cigars, an example of which is shown by Fig'. 2 the fllingra is first' rolled and a cardboard tube c containing the filtering medium e is then placedl over the end of the cigar. The outer covering or leaf f is then arranged and serv'cured in position thus vholding the mouth piece-containing the filter .securely in posi-4 of a wrapper surrounding saidffiller and' projecting beyond the same atthe mouth end, a tubular reinforcement held whollyl within the projecting portion to Aleave a smooth unbroken exterior on said wrapper,
and a drum consisting of a ring covered on one end and the sides with filtering fabric, Asaid drum bein positioned in said rein'- forcenent with t e fabric in spaced relation to themouth end of the wrapper.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
