Description

@anni (dimite.
`JOSEPH-A. BUNNAGAN, OF.` MEXZICO, MISSOURI.
I Letters Patcnt'No. 103,031,` lated May 17, 1870.
`nvIPRovn'D SADDLE-STIRRUP.
Il'lxeA Schedule referred to in these LetterszPetent and making part vof the same.
To all whom it may concern: i
l Be it known that I, JOSEPH, A. DUNNAGAN, of
Mexico, in the, countyof Audrain and State of Mis-V souri, have invented anew and useful Improvement in addlc-Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the foliowing is full clear, and exact description `thereof, whichwill enable` others skilled in the art tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accomf panying drawing forming partoi' Ithis specification.
This invention relates toa. new and useful improvey ment in stirrups for riding-saddles, whereby ease, conremence, and durability are combined; and
. It consists in the applicatibn of spiral springs (two y. or'xnore) to the stirrup, by which the foot-piece` or Tread ofthe stiriup is I nade elastic, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawingv Figure 1 is a frontview of the stirrup. y
Figure 2 is a' 'vertical section'of iig. l, on thc line` Similar let-ters of reference indicate corresponding A is the top piece ofthe stirrup, arond` which the stirrup-strap is looped, andwhich may be made of 4 eitherwood or met-al. i A
' i B B representmetallic bows, which are attached Jto each side of A, as seen in iig. 2, extending downward in `theforrn seen in Afig. l, and are connectedtogethcr by a rod, C, at the middle ofthe bottom.
Dis the foot-piece or tread of the stirru'p. E is a broadplate, either one or two, with its ends freely up and down.
To prevent binding the holes may be elongated in the form of slots, if desired.l This plate is bent'down, to receive and keep in place the foot-piece D, which lat-ter may be of any size and form, with a toe, F, or not, as may be desired. i
G G represent springs.
A single spring may be employed for eaclr;bo\v, made fast at'the center of the bow, as at H, extending upon the bows, to receive the ends of the plate E, as seen in thedrawing.
.By this arrangement, it will be seen that the footpieee ofthe stirrnp-wiil give or be lelastic to 'the foot,
and that therigidity of the connnon saddle-stirrup is avoided. `Any amount of elasticity may be obtained.
The springs may be of stel, highly tempered, 0r
. brass, alxd'they may be made in two pieces for each bow of the stirrup, so that, in case one should fail, another may be substituted therefor. Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire tosecure by Letters Patent-- y 4The arrangement of thcsprings G G and foot-snpport D E, with respect to the bows, Aasand for the Witnesses :4
