THOMAS W. SNOE, F ALEXANDRIA, INDIANA.
HANDLE-BAR GRIP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. SNon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Handle-Bar Grip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handle bar grips for bicycles and the like, and has for its object the provision of an efiicient, inexpen-- sive and durable device easily applied to any bicycle, and one which will not in use become loose.
The invention, as hereinafter particularly claimed, will be readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment of the same when taken in connection with the accompanying illustrative drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation of one embodiment of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sect-ion. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 33 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of the connecting yoke.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents the end portion of the usual tubular handle bar, which is provided with a transverse opening 2 at a distance from its end corresponding to substantially one half the length of the grip 3.
The grip may be of wood, cork or composition and is of the ordinary shape, tubular and closed at the outer end. At the closed end the grip is provided with an axial bore 1 and preferably with a recess 5 for the housing of a washer 6, and upon its interior, oppositely arranged longitudinal grooves 7.
A metal yoke 8 of substantially U-shape, has a head portion 9 provided with a threaded perforation 10, and its two parallel arms 11 are provided intermediate their length one with a plain perforation 12 and the other with a threaded perforation 13. The yoke is arranged to he slipped over the handle bar with its head overlying the open end of the same and its two arms lying on opposite sides thereof with its perforations 12 and 13 in register with the opening 2. A screw threaded pin 1 1 is then passed through the openings 12 and 2 and threaded into the opening 13, thus not only Specification 01' Letters Patent.

securing the parts against relative longitudinal and rotary movement, but also clamping the yoke firmly upon the handle bar. The grip 8 is then slipped over the yoke, with its grooves 7 receiving the arms 11 so as to lock the grip and yoke together against turning, and the screw 15 is passed through the washer 6 and the axial bore -1- of the grip and threaded into the perforation 10, whereby the grip is tightly drawn against the end of the handle bar and secured against longitudinal displacement. No cement is used. The parts are firmly secured together and to the handle bar, and yet in such manner as to fall apart when the screws 15 and 1-1 are removed.
The grip and yoke, forming together an article of manufacture and sale, are adapted to be readily atlixed to any handle bar, the only preparation. required being the piercing of the bar with the transverse opening 2, a step easily performed by any ordinary mechanic.
lVhat is claimed isz- 1. The combination, with a handle bar or the like, of a yoke overlying the open end 'and having arms extending longitudinally on opposite sides thereof, means to clamp the arms to the bar, a grip provided with oppositely arranged interior grooves to receive the yoke arms, and means to secure the grip to the yoke against longitudinal movement.
2. The combination, with a handle bar or the like, of a yoke overlying the open end and having arms extending longitudinally on opposite sides thereof, a screw threaded pin transfixing the yoke arms to clamp the same to the bar, a grip having an axially bored closed end and provided with oppositely arranged interior grooves to receive the yoke arms. and a screw journaled in the axial bore of the grip and threaded into the head of the yoke to secure the grip and yoke against longitudinal movement.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS W. SNOE.
