VALVE.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Wham F. BITDLLDLG, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and tiguresof reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide a construction of valve which will require no internal screws, screw threads,'bolts or pins, whereby the number of parts will be reduced, and especially those parts eliminatedthat are small and expensive and liable to corrode, andliability to rusting or sticking in any of its parts avoided, and the parts capable of being easily and quickly assembled or taken apart for cleaning.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a valve embodying my invention; Fig. 2 a top plan view thereof; and Fig. 3 a detail view in vertical section of the valve cover.
In the form of my invention illustrated in the drawings, a valve chamber A is employed, which may be ca st or machined, and hich concentric with the inlet port a in its lower end has an annular recess for the receptionof a valveseat B of such material and form as is suited to the kind of valve used, my inventionnot being limited to any 15 I As a ball valve C is the one illustrated, the valve seat is of ring or annular form. The top of the valve chamber A is closed by a cover, which may be cast-or machined, consisting of a head or cap D, and a cage-like body portion E in the form of a cylindrical shell having its walls provided withholes or openings for'the passage of liquid, and" whose internal form and size are such as to constitute guiding means for the valvein moving to and from its seat when the valve is, for example, of the ball type illustrated.
'nular recess in which it is placed.
Serial No. 421,133.
The lower end of the cover body engages the top of the valve seat to hold it in place, and preferably the distance between the lower end of said body and the under side cap or head is the same as the distance from the upper edge of the valve chamber A to the bottom of such chamber on the inside. In order to secure the proper holding efiect of the cover upon the valve seat, the valve seat is a little thicker than the depth of the an- The valve cover and the valve chamber may be secured together in any desired way, as, for example, by means of a screw thread connection or engagement between the cover just below its cap or head, and the inner wall of the valve chamber thereat, or by screws or bolts, or, as is shown in the drawings, by means of an inverted U-formed yoke F, whose two vertical legs have lugs that hook beneath the bottom of the valve chamber on the outside thereof, and whose horizontal member extends diametrically across the top of the valve structure, and. has a threaded opening for the reception of asetscrew or bolt Gr, which'impinges upon the top of the valve'cover, and thereby serves to clamp the parts tightly together. If
preferred, when the yoke is used, some other a gasket H between the under side of the valve seat and the bottom'of its recess, and when such a gasket is used, another gasket I of like thickness should be placed between the cap or head of the valve cover and the ,top of the valve chamber. To assemble the parts of the valve illustrated in the drawings, the valve seat and gasket are placed in the annular recess in the bottom of the Specification of Letters Patent. valve chamber, next the valve C is put in place, and then the cover, and the partssecured together by the clamp.
Havin thus described my invention whatIcaimis-- An automatically operating valvehaving a valve chamber, a valve seat having threacL j5 less connection with the chamber and seperable therefrom, a removable cover for the valve chamber, means interposed between cover and seat, whereby the cover holds the seat in position, the internal surfaces of the melee cover ancl chamber being threadless, and 301 means external to the cover and chamber to seizure the cover in position.
In testimony whereof I afiixmy signature in presence (if ,two Witnesses.
