Abstract

1484983 Dynamo-electric machines BBC BROWN BOVERI & CO Ltd 30 Oct 1975 [19 Nov 1974] 45009/75 Heading H2A The supporting structure of an electrical machine comprises coaxial inner and outer rings 5, 1 joined together by spokes 6, the spokes being tangent to an imaginary cylinder 8, Fig. 2, coaxial with the rings and located within the inner ring, the longitudinal axes of every two neighbouring spokes intersecting within the inner ring and each spoke being inflexible over its whole effective length in its longitudinal direction. The machine shown is a vertical axis machine, the inner ring 5 is a bearing housing and the outer ring 1 is a concrete supporting shell. The construction of the supporting structure permits relative angular movement of the shell 1 and bearing housing in response to stresses arising during operation. The lower bearing is radially supported by spokes 6<SP>1</SP> similar to epokes 6 and axially supported by a surface 18 of the concrete shell. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (both not shown), the concrete ring is replaced by a truss structure (1<SP>1</SP>) connected to the bearing housing (5<SP>11</SP>) by spokes (6<SP>11</SP>) which may be straight (Fig. 4) or curved (Fig. 5) and which are made up of several sections, the sections of adjacent spokes being interconnected by cross-braces (11).
