Formation of Molybdenum and Tungsten Carbides by Heating in Plasma Jet //Denki Kagaku oyobi Kogyo Butsuri Kagaku. - 1976. - Т. 44. - №. 12. A known method of producing nanocrystalline cubic molybdenum carbide [Matsumoto O., Mitarai Y. Formation of Molybdenum and Tungsten Carbides by Heating in Plasma Jet // Denki Kagaku oyobi Kogyo Butsuri Kagaku. - 1976. - T. 44. - No. 12. - S. 815-817], taken as a prototype, which is carried out in two stages. At the first stage, the initial powders of molybdenum oxide and graphite are mixed, a tablet is pressed from them, and it is placed in a grinding device, where the tablet is crushed using a DC arc discharge, ignited in an argon atmosphere at a temperature of about 3000 ° C, to a particle size of less than 44 μm ... At the second stage, the reactor chamber is evacuated, an argon plasma jet with a power of 2.2 kW is created, the crushed powder is moved through the feeder at a speed of 0.5 g / min into the combustion zone of the plasma jet. In this case, the carbonization reaction, spraying and quenching of the resulting product take place in the reactor chamber.

This method makes it possible to obtain nanosized particles of cubic molybdenum carbide α-MoC 1-x in a carbon matrix; however, it is technically difficult due to the two-stage process and leads to the formation of a product contaminated with oxide compounds.

The technical result of the proposed invention is to create a method for producing nanocrystalline cubic molybdenum carbide.

The proposed method for producing nanocrystalline cubic molybdenum carbide, as in the prototype, includes the use of a compressed mixture of powders of molybdenum-containing and carbon-containing components, evacuation of the reactor chamber, generating a plasma jet for sublimation of the initial components, spraying and quenching the resulting product in the reactor chamber.

According to the invention, after evacuation, the reactor chamber is filled with nitrogen at room temperature to a pressure of 2⋅10 5 Pa. Then, at a charging voltage of 2.5 kV of a capacitor bank with a capacity of 6 mF, molybdenum and carbon-containing electric-discharge plasma is generated using a coaxial magnetoplasma accelerator with a graphite barrel and a composite central electrode containing a shank made of steel and a tip with an electrically fusible jumper from a compressed mixture of molybdenum powders and soot in an atomic ratio of Mo: C from 0.70: 0.30 to 0.50: 0.50, placed between the graphite barrel and the graphite tip.

MoC1-x.When a hypersonic jet of molybdenum- and carbon-containing electric-discharge plasma is formed in this way, a compressed mixture of molybdenum and soot powders is sublimated into the plasma state, their reaction in liquid-phase form with the formation of cubic molybdenum carbide MoC 1-x and sputtering in the nitrogen atmosphere of the reactor chamber at speeds of more than 3 km / s, which provides a high crystallization rate of the material as a necessary condition for the formation of MoC 1-x .

The advantages of the proposed method are the formation of nanosized particles of cubic molybdenum carbide MoC 1-x with an average size of 40 ± 5 nm in a single short-term experimental cycle with a duration of up to ~ 1 ms and the absence of impurity oxide phases.

An increase in the charging voltage of the capacitor bank over 2.5 kV leads to excessive heating of the material and a transition to hexagonal modifications of molybdenum carbide due to the residual thermal effect, and the charging voltage of less than 2.5 kV does not provide complete sublimation of the compressed mixture of molybdenum and soot powders, which leads to contamination of the product with impurity phases.

Предложенный способ позволил получить продукты с содержанием нанокристаллического кубического карбида молибдена от 96,3 до 99,0 мас.%.The proposed method made it possible to obtain products with a content of nanocrystalline cubic molybdenum carbide from 96.3 to 99.0 wt.%.

16.The production of nanocrystalline cubic molybdenum carbide was carried out using a setup (Fig. 1) containing a coaxial magnetoplasma accelerator, in which a cylindrical electrically conductive barrel is made of two electrically conductive cylinders: an inner cylinder 1 of graphite and an outer cylinder 2 of durable non-magnetic material (stainless steel) , a central electrode consisting of a graphite tip 3 and a shank 4 made of steel. The barrel and the central electrode are electrically connected by a fusible bridge 5 made of a compressed mixture of molybdenum powders (purity 99.5 wt%, Aladdin Industrial Corp.) and carbon black (K-354, PKF EcoPolza) in an atomic ratio of Mo: C from 0.70 : 0.30 to 0.50: 0.50 with an average particle size of not more than 1 micron, placed on top of a conductive carbon layer applied to the surface of the insulator 6, which separates the conductive shaft from the central electrode. The body 7 is made of a magnetic material, is mated with an external metal cylinder 2 and overlaps the area of the fusible link 5. The length of the part overlapping the area of the fusible link 5 is 40 ÷ 50 mm, and its outer surface is tapered. The solenoid 8 is made in one piece with the flange 9 and the cylindrical part 10, in which the body 7 is located and reinforced with a threaded plug 11. The solenoid 8 is reinforced with a strong fiberglass body 12 and pulled together by powerful conductive pins 13 between the flange 9 and the fiberglass thrust ring 14. Conductive pins 13 electrically connected by a conductive ring 15, and a busbar 16 of the external power supply circuit is connected to the conductive pins 13. The second busbar 17 of the power supply circuit is connected to the shank 4. To the second busbar 17, a key 18 and a capacitor bank 19 are connected in series with the busbar 16.

The free end of the accelerator barrel is inserted into the reactor chamber 20 through an axial hole in the first metal side cover 21 and is hermetically fixed by means of O-rings 22 located between the flange 9 and the side cover 21, and pins 23 connecting the ring 24 abutting against the flange 9 , and the first side cover 21. The reactor chamber 20 is connected through the first valve 25 to the foreline pump. The chamber-reactor 20 through the second valve 26 is connected to a cylinder filled with nitrogen and equipped with a pressure gauge. The volume of the reactor chamber 20 is limited by two side covers 21 and 27, which are bolted to it.

An electrically fusible bridge 5 is placed between the inner cylinder 1 of the accelerator barrel and the tip of the central electrode 3, made of a compressed mixture of powdered molybdenum and soot in an atomic ratio of Mo: C from 0.70: 0.30 to 0.50: 0.50 with particle sizes not more than 1 micron, laid on top of a conductive carbon layer previously applied to the surface of the insulator 6 by spraying a carbon spray of the Graphit 33 brand. The accelerator is tightly docked with the outer side of the first cover 21 using a ring 24 and O-rings 22. The first cover 21 with an accelerator fixed on it tightly docked by means of bolted connections with the chamber-reactor 20. The opposite side of the chamber-reactor 20 is closed with the second cover 27. After that, the chamber-reactor 20 is evacuated through the first valve 25, after which it is filled with nitrogen through the second valve 26 at a pressure of 2⋅10 5 Pa and at room temperature.

The capacitor bank 19 with a capacity of 6 mF of the capacitive energy storage is charged to a charging voltage of 2.5 kV. The key 18 is closed, after which the current from the capacitor bank 19 begins to flow in the power supply circuit of the accelerator through the busbar 16, the conductive ring 15, the studs 13, the flange 9, the turns of the solenoid 8, the body 7, the outer metal cylinder 2, the inner cylinder 1, the fusible link 5 , graphite tip 3, shank 4, second busbar 17. In this case, the fusible link 5 heats up, melts, and its material goes into a plasma state with the formation of an arc discharge. The configuration of a plasma structure of the Z-pinch type with a circular plasma bridge is specified by the shape of the fusible bridge 5 and the presence of a cylindrical channel in the insulator 6. Then, the discharge plasma is compressed by the magnetic field of its own current and the axial field of solenoid 8 and exists in the accelerating channel in the form of an elongating Z-pinch with a circular a plasma bridge at the end, through which the current passes to the cylindrical surface of the accelerating channel of the inner cylinder 1, during the acceleration of the plasma bridge under the action of the Lorentz force. The plasma jet flows from the accelerating channel of the inner cylinder 1 into the reactor chamber 20 filled with nitrogen, is sprayed from the free boundary of the bow shock wave, and the resulting product is quenched. After the deposition of the synthesized material on the inner surface of the chamber-reactor 20, open the cover 27 and collect the product of plasmodynamic synthesis.
