Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as flame-retardant, having extremely low coloring degree of product, by reacting a monofunctional halogenated phenol or halogenated bisphenol with an alkylene oxide in the presence of an aliphatic tertiary amine of a catalyst in a fixed ratio. CONSTITUTION:A monofunctional halogenated phenol and/or halogenated bisphenol is reacted with an alkylene oxide in the presence of 0.05-3wt.%, preferably 0.2-0.8wt.% based on the halogenated phenol or halogenated bisphenol of the raw material of an aliphatic tertiary amine [e.g. (CH3)2NC8H17] shown by the formula (at least one of R<1>-R<3> is 5-28C alkyl and the other is 1-28C alkyl) to give an adduct of an alkylene oxide. The adduct is useful as an additive for synthetic polymers or synthetic fibers, especially a flame- retardant of addition type or reaction type.
