Abstract

PURPOSE:To uniformize the thickness of a laminated body which is sealed with a ferroelectric liquid crystal between substrates formed thereon with a spacer and sealing material by curing the sealing material of the laminated body in a pressurized state. CONSTITUTION:The ferroelectric liquid crystal 2 is coated by a printing method on one of two sheets of the substrates 1 provided with electrodes and liquid crystal orienting means and the spacer consisting of polyimide, etc., and the sealing material 3 consisting of a thermosetting epoxy resin, etc., are formed on the other thereof. The two substrates 1 are then laminated in a vacuum. This laminated body is then held in place between steel plates 4 heated to the temp. region where the liquid crystal 2 exhibits an isotropic liquid phase. The laminated body is thereby pressurized and is further heated up to the curing temp. of the seal 3. The heating is stopped after the desired time and the laminated body is allowed to cool with air and the pressure thereof is lowered. The liquid crystal element having a uniform thickness is thereby obtd. without generating defective orientation in the liquid crystal 2.
