Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as an intermediate for a macrocyclic lactone having musk-like odor and useful as a raw material for perfumery, in high efficiency, by reducing an easily available alkaline-earth metal salt of a dibasic acid monoester with diborane. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound of formula II (e.g. 12-hydroxy- dodecanoic acid methyl ester) can be produced by reducing (A) 1mol. of an alkaline-earth metal salt of a dibasic acid monoester of formula I (R is ester residue; n is 10-16; M is alkaline-earth metal) (e.g. barium salt of dodecanoic diacid monomethyl ester) with (B) 2.0-3.0mol. equivalent of diborane preferably in a solvent such as tetrahydrofuran (THF) at 0-80 deg.C, especially preferably 20-60 deg.C. The diborane may be commercially available diborane-THF complex solution or may be the one generated in the reaction system e.g. by reacting NaBH4 with dimethyl sulfate.
