Abstract

PURPOSE: In a vapor-phase process for making carbon fiber, ultrafine particles of heat-resistant metal or a metal compound are made to stay in the carbon fiber- forming zone, thus producing carbon fiber efficiently in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: For example, a core tube of alumina is set in an electric furnace horizontally. In the meantime, ultrafine particles of heat-resistant metal in Group IVa, Va, VIa or VIII of the periodic table such as Ti, V, Mo or Fe or metal compound such as V2O3, TaC, NiNo3 with particle sized of less than 300Å are suspended in ethanol and the suspension is sprayed on the surface of graphite base plate. The base plate is set in the core tube and a hydrocarbon such as benzene of 1W60% in proportion is introduced together with a carrier gas such as hydrogen into the core tube, further the tube is heated up to 950W1,300°C to form carbon fiber. Finally, the inside of the core tube is replaced with nitrogen gas, cooled, then the carbon fiber is taken out.
