When body 9 grows to a predetermined thickness, rod 6 is moved while rotating. As a result, said body 9 shifts with a hollow part left, and it is converted into transparent glass pipe 11 by heating with heating furnace 10 placed in the rod moving direction. At this time, body 9 is shrunken. This transparent vitrification is carried out in the presence of a dehydrating agent such as Cl2 or SOCl2 to remove OH groups in the quartz glass pipe.
