Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an economical absorbent for mercury (Hg) having a large trapping property and a long service life by making gold (Au) to be carried on pumice crushed to a proper size as carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Pumice having a lot of pores, particularly continuous pore type, is crushed to a size about 0.3W0.9mm in diameter. The crushed pumice as carrier is immersed in a solution such as aqua regia which contains Au. The pumice then undergoes thermal decomposition or hydrogen reduction to form Au on the surface of pumice carrier in amount of about 10W30%. The resulted pumice, when used as Hg absorbent, can trap gaseous Hg, and forms into Au-Hg amalgam, which is easy to remove. Used absorbent, or trapping agent, is heated to decompose amalgam so that both Hg and trapping agent can be regenerated. In this way, an economical, stable, good trapping Hg-absorbent is provided.
