Abstract

The present teachings are directed to methods of preparing cylindrical carbon structures, specifically single-walled carbon nanotubes, with a desired chirality. The methods include the steps of providing a catalyst component on a substrate and a carbon component, contacting the catalyst component and the carbon component to produce a cylindrical carbon structure. Then, no longer providing the carbon component and determining the chirality of the cylindrical carbon structure. The catalyst component is then cleaned and the process is repeated until the cylindrical carbon structure fulfills a desired characteristic, such as, length. The chirality of the single-walled carbon nanotube grown, after cleaning of the catalyst component, has the same chirality as the initially produced nanotube.

Description

The present invention relates to a method for producing carbon nanotubes from initially produced nanotubes so that the later produced nanotubes have the same chirality as the originally produced nanotubes.

Since it has been found that the chirality of a nanotube affects or controls a number of nanotube properties, a cylindrical carbon structure with a particular chirality, specifically a carbon nanotube, more specifically a single wall carbon nanotube The demand for manufacturing (hereinafter referred to as “SWNT”) was an unfulfilled demand.

「Nanoletters」 Vol. 5, No. 6, June 2005, pp.997-1002 を参照のこと。
「Nanoletters」 Vol. 5, No. 6, June 2005, pp.997-1002
Smalley et al., A CVD-based method by growing SWNT fibers with open ends, reductively binding nanosized transition metal particles to the open ends of SWNT fibers, and limiting SWNT growth on the exposed metal particles. Described the method of “cloning” SWNTs. SWNT growth from bonded nanocatalysts is said to have the same diameter and chirality (n, m) as the base SWNT. See “Nanoletters” Vol. 5, No. 6, June 2005, pp.997-1002.
"Nanoletters" Vol. 5, No. 6, June 2005, pp.997-1002

Growing SWNTs using metal catalysts The total amount of SWNTs that can be grown by conventional techniques was limited by the deposition and coating of metal catalysts having layers of either other mixtures, amorphous carbon and metal carbides. In addition, the method of growing SWNTs did not provide a way to control the chirality of the manufactured SWNTs.

Due to its unique chemical and physical properties, SWNTs have attracted attention. Carbon nanotubes can be described as crumpled and rolled graphite sheets in which hexagonal units of carbon atoms are bonded together using very strong bonds between carbon atoms. SWNTs have a minimum diameter of about 0.4 nanometers with lengths in the range of several hundred micrometers with very little dimensional variation. The electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes ranges from semiconductors to metals, depending on the chirality of the nanotubes.

The chirality of the nanotube is indicated by a double index (n, m). Here, n and m are integers that describe how a single strip of hexagonal “wire mesh” graphite is cut to completely wrap the surface of the cylinder. When the two indices are the same (ie n = m), the resulting tube is referred to as an “armchair” type, or (n, n) type. Because when a tube of that type is cut perpendicular to the tube axis, only the hexagonal sides are exposed and the pattern surrounding the tube edge is similar to an armchair arm and seat that is repeated n times Because it does. Due to their metallic nature, they have very high electrical and thermal conductivity, and armchair tubes are a preferred form of SWNT.

Metal nanotubes can exhibit ballistic conduction, conduction by non-scattered charge carriers. Due to the ballistic conduction, the resistance value becomes independent of the length, and a so-called quantum resistance (6.5 kΩ) is observed.

Arc discharge, laser evaporation, thermochemical vapor deposition (hereinafter “CVD”) and plasma enhanced CVD are some known methods for carbon nanotube production. Both SWNTs and multiwall nanotubes can be produced by arc discharge and laser evaporation methods.

Catalysts supported on a variety of suitable supports can be utilized in CVD processes for producing carbon nanotubes. A complete understanding of the effectiveness of the catalyst formulation, such as transition metals (Ni, Co, Fe, etc.), support materials, catalyst / support interactions, synthesis temperatures, and diameters of carbon nanotubes produced by CVD methods and Hydrocarbon gas in chirality is still under development. See, for example, Harutyunyan et al., “Nanoletters” Vol. 2, No. 5, 2002, pp. 525-530 and US Patent Application Publication No. 2003/0124717 A1.

Another method disclosed by the present invention for preparing single wall carbon nanotubes is to supply a catalyst component onto a substrate, to supply a carbon component, to produce a first single wall carbon nanotube having chirality. Contacting the catalyst component with the carbon component, and stopping the supply of the carbon component. Next, the catalyst component is washed and the carbon component is fed again to produce a continuous first single-wall carbon nanotube having the same chirality as the first single-wall carbon nanotube. As the single-walled carbon nanotubes are removed from the catalyst component, this procedure is repeated until the continuing first single-walled carbon nanotubes meet the desired properties.

In the CVD method that can be utilized by the present invention, after a period of exposure to a carbon source, the catalyst nanoparticles utilized in the method of the present invention grow a layer of coated or non-reactive material. Various cleaning processes are shown in the present invention for cleaning the catalyst component by reducing any coating present on the catalyst component.

Cleaning the catalyst component is sufficiently active to remove or deactivate any coatings or deposits present on the catalyst component to the extent that the cleaning allows subsequent continued manufacture of the cylindrical carbon structure. Says to use some cleaning method. Cleaning the catalyst component preferably includes a cleaning method that does not react or substantially does not react with the cylindrical carbon structure.

Oxidation, reduction, dissolution, radiant heating, chemical treatment, plasma treatment, and combinations thereof are examples of suitable cleaning methods for removal of the coating on the catalyst components. Examples of chemical treatment include contacting the coating with, for example, water, peroxide, and acid. Radiant heating includes exposing the catalyst component and the coating to radiation at a wavelength that can primarily heat the coating and / or catalyst component to induce oxidation of the coating. It is preferred that radiant heating does not adversely affect either the catalyst component or the cylindrical carbon structure. Examples of suitable radiation methods include electromagnetic radiation, laser radiation, and microwave radiation.

In general, the coating present on the catalyst component consists of amorphous carbon, multi-layer carbon, metal carbide, and combinations thereof. According to this theory, as the CVD process continues, non-nanotube-forming carbon reaches the catalyst component and can form, but is not limited to, amorphous carbon, multi-layer carbon, and metal carbide. Each of these compositions results in reduced access to the catalyst component relative to the incoming carbon component, eventually resulting in a decrease or termination of nanotube growth. According to this theory, these coating components were incompletely combusted in the supplied hydrocarbons, incompletely formed in the cylindrical carbon structure, formed of metal carbides using metal elements of the catalyst component, and incompletely combusted. It occurs in a variety of ways, including stratification of either or both of hydrocarbons or incompletely formed cylindrical carbon structures.

Catalyst components can also be less active due to the formation of metal oxides on the catalyst. Also, reduction of the metal oxide to the metal state can improve catalyst performance and, in some cases, can be completed during the cleaning of the catalyst components.

The cylindrical carbon structure produced by the method of the present invention can include single wall carbon nanotubes, double wall carbon nanotubes, and multi-wall carbon nanotubes. The method of the present invention preferably produces single wall carbon nanotubes.

In general, the substrates utilized in the disclosed methods are not limited and can include any commonly used substrate. Suitable examples of substrates include, but are not limited to, silicon substrates, glass substrates, alumina substrates, and quartz substrates.

According to the present invention, a single-wall carbon nanotube is provided to supply a catalyst component onto a substrate, to supply a carbon component, and to produce a first single-wall carbon nanotube having chirality. Can be prepared by contacting them. After a sufficient amount of the initial SWNT is formed, the carbon component is no longer fed and the catalyst component can be washed. After cleaning, the carbon component can be re-supplied to produce a continuous single wall carbon nanotube having the same chirality as the first single wall carbon nanotube.

The process can further include determining the chirality of the first single-wall carbon nanotube at any point after the supply of carbon components has ceased. The process can be repeated until a single-wall carbon nanotube that meets the desired properties is produced, or until it is no longer possible to produce a first single-wall carbon nanotube in which the catalyst component continues after washing.

Desired properties are, for example, length, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, metallic properties, semiconductor properties, and non-metallic properties.

The present invention provides a catalyst component on a substrate, a carbon component, and then contacting the catalyst component with the carbon component to produce a first single-walled carbon nanotube having chirality. It further includes a process for preparing wall carbon nanotubes. Stopping the supply of the carbon component is the next step, allowing the catalyst component to be cleaned. Repeating the supply of the carbon component and contacting the carbon component with the catalyst component produces a continuous first single-walled carbon nanotube having the same chirality as the first single-walled carbon nanotube. This process can be repeated until the continuing first single-wall carbon nanotubes meet the desired properties and the single-wall carbon nanotubes are removed from the catalyst component.

The process of the present invention for preparing SWNTs is a plasma enhanced CVD method or thermal CVD method, for example, to produce carbon components as carbon vapor produced from a carbon source such as methane, ethylene, acetylene, or carbon dioxide. Either of these can be used. In the process of the present invention, the catalyst component can be heated to a temperature in the range of about 600-1000 ° C.

The process can further include determining the chirality of the initially produced single-wall carbon nanotube after the carbon component supply is stopped.

Desired properties exhibited by the continuing first SWNT can include, for example, length, electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, metallic properties, semiconductor properties, and non-metallic properties.

The catalyst component utilized to produce SWNTs can include nanoparticles containing transition metals such as iron, nickel, cobalt, molybdenum, ruthenium, and combinations thereof.

Washing the catalyst component can be completed by reducing any coating present on the catalyst component. In cleaning methods that are sufficiently active for removal, it is preferred that an optional coating be present on the catalyst component to the extent that the cleaning allows the production of single wall carbon nanotubes. Furthermore, any cleaning method does not react or at least substantially does not react with the single wall carbon nanotubes.

According to the present invention, oxidation, reduction, dissolution, radiation heating, chemical treatment, plasma treatment, and combinations thereof can all be used as cleaning methods. The chemical treatment includes contacting the coating with at least one element selected from the group consisting of water, peroxide, and acid. Radiant heating includes, for example, exposing the coating to electromagnetic radiation, laser radiation, or microwave radiation.

The chirality of a cylindrical carbon structure (or SWNT) can be determined by various methods including Raman characteristics, micro-Raman characteristics, IV (“current-voltage”) characteristics, and STM (“scanning tunneling microscopy”) measurements. .

Electromagnetic radiation refers to radiation consisting of vibrating electric and magnetic fields and propagating at the speed of light. Examples of electromagnetic radiation include, but are not limited to, gamma rays, X-rays, ultraviolet rays, visible rays, infrared rays, microwaves, and radio waves.
