2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, in the field of optical communication, wavelength division multiplexing has been studied in which a plurality of signals are put on light of different wavelengths (λ 1 to λ n ) and transmitted through a single optical fiber to increase information capacity. . In this method, an optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer that multiplexes / demultiplexes light of different wavelengths plays an important role. Here, since the directions of the equiphase surfaces are different for each wavelength, the light condensing position is shifted at the boundary between the output-side slab waveguide 5 and each output channel waveguide 6 when the wavelength changes. For this reason, light of different wavelengths can be extracted from each output channel waveguide 6, and as a result, light multiplexing and demultiplexing is realized. The wavelength λ of light output from the output channel waveguide 6 disposed on the symmetry axis 5a of the output slab waveguide 5 is expressed by the following equation (2).

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, according to the conventional optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer, as is apparent from FIG. 11, it is optimal when the number of clad rows is 5 and the clad row arrangement period is 80 μm. Has occurred. That is, even if the cladding portion is provided, a transition loss of a level that cannot be ignored yet occurs. As a cause of this, if the clad part 11 is entirely formed of clad (if all the cores of the clad part 11 are removed), the longitudinal mode mismatch between the
[0015]
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a star coupler and an optical wavelength division multiplexer that can significantly reduce the transition losses.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, the present invention provides, as a first feature, a channel waveguide, a slab waveguide connected to the channel waveguide, and a plurality of arrays each connected to the slab waveguide. A waveguide,
The slab waveguide is a region on an extension line between the plurality of arrayed waveguides, arranged vertically and horizontally in the vicinity of the connection portion between the slab waveguide and the arrayed waveguide, and a core at the lower part. A plurality of formed cladding portions are formed, and the height of the cores of the plurality of cladding portions is formed so as to be low in the cladding portion close to the array waveguide and high in the cladding portion away from the array waveguide. A star coupler is provided.
[0017]
According to this configuration, in the slab waveguide, the clad portion is formed so as to form a predetermined row in the core existing in the vicinity of the array waveguide and on the extension line between the input ends of the array waveguide. The clad part is formed so that the height gradually differs according to the distance from the end of the arrayed waveguide, so that the longitudinal mode mismatch between the slab waveguide and the clad part can be reduced. It is possible to obtain a star coupler that can significantly reduce the transition loss as compared with the prior art.
[0018]
In order to achieve the above object, the present invention provides, as a second feature, an input channel waveguide, an input side slab waveguide connected to the input channel waveguide, and an input side slab waveguide. A plurality of arrayed waveguides having one end connected and having different lengths, an output-side slab waveguide connected to the other end of the plurality of arrayed waveguides, and an output channel connected to the output-side slab waveguide A waveguide,
At least one of the input-side slab waveguide and the output-side slab waveguide is a region on an extension line between the plurality of arrayed waveguides, and a connection portion between the slab waveguide and the arrayed waveguides. A plurality of clad portions, which are arranged vertically and horizontally in the vicinity and have cores formed in the lower portion, are formed, and the height of the cores of the plurality of clad portions is low in the clad portion close to the array waveguide, and the array waveguide Provided is an optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer characterized in that it is formed so as to be higher in a clad portion away from .
[0019]
According to this configuration, the input side slab waveguide or the output side slab waveguide has a core in the vicinity of the arrayed waveguide diffraction grating and on the extension line between the input ends of the arrayed waveguide. Since the clad part is formed so as to form a predetermined row, and this clad part is formed so as to gradually differ in height depending on the distance from the end part of the arrayed waveguide, the slab waveguide and the clad part The longitudinal mode mismatch can be reduced, and as a result, an optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer capable of significantly reducing transition loss as compared with the prior art can be obtained.
[0022]
In the present invention, an arrayed waveguide is a concept including channel waveguides, and one of which is called an arrayed waveguide because it is used by arranging a plurality of channel waveguides. It is.

The wavelength λ of light output from the output channel waveguide 6 arranged on the symmetry axis 5a of the output side slab waveguide 5 is expressed by the following equation (4).

In the above embodiment, the optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer has been mainly described. However, the present invention is not limited to the optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer, but can be applied to various optical devices used in the optical multiplexing transmission system. Is possible. For example, it can be applied to a star coupler, an M × N frequency routing device, an Add / Drop filter, and the like.
[0046]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the star coupler of the present invention, a channel waveguide, a slab waveguide connected to the channel waveguide, and a plurality of arrayed waveguides each having one end connected to the slab waveguide. The slab waveguide includes a plurality of clad portions having different core heights depending on a distance from a connection portion between the arrayed waveguide and the slab waveguide, between the plurality of arrayed waveguides. Since it is a region on the extension line and is arranged vertically and horizontally in the vicinity of the connection portion, the longitudinal mode mismatch between the slab waveguide and the cladding portion can be reduced, and a star coupler having low loss characteristics can be obtained. .
[0047]
Further, according to the optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer of the present invention, the input channel waveguide, the input side slab waveguide connected to the input channel waveguide, and one end connected to the input side slab waveguide A plurality of array waveguides having different lengths from each other, an output slab waveguide connected to the other end of the plurality of array waveguides, and an output channel waveguide connected to the output slab waveguide. And at least one of the input-side slab waveguide and the output-side slab waveguide has a plurality of claddings whose core height differs according to the distance from the connection portion between the arrayed waveguide and the slab waveguide Since the portion is a region on the extension line between the plurality of arrayed waveguides and is arranged vertically and horizontally in the vicinity of the connecting portion, it is possible to reduce the longitudinal mode mismatch between the slab waveguide and the cladding portion, as a result Transition losses than the conventional can be remarkably reduced, it is possible to obtain a low-loss characteristic optical wavelength demultiplexer.
[0048]
Furthermore, the optical wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer of the present invention applies a photoresist onto the core film formed on the substrate, exposes the photoresist in a predetermined pattern, and removes the photoresist in the exposed portion. Form resist-removed parts with different areas, use dry etching, and use the area selectivity of the etching rate to remove the unnecessary part of the core film and form the core so that the core height becomes the desired value was obtained by forming a cladding layer on the surface of the core, so progressively core height h toward the core of the cladding portion to the connecting portion is formed to be smaller, the transition losses as compared with the conventional Ru can be significantly reduced.
