2. Description of the Related Art Most of solid fine particles such as pigments, magnetic powders, ceramics powders, etc.
For example, it has a weak affinity with water, organic solvents, organic polymers and the like. For this reason, secondary aggregation occurs, and the characteristics of the dispersion liquid are likely to change. Therefore, various techniques have been developed for forming a solid fine particle dispersion liquid having stable properties by adding a dispersant as a third component to a dispersion medium.

The present inventors have found that the dispersibility of the dispersion improves when the specific surface area of the beads used in the media mill exceeds a certain value. Although the direct factor that the specific surface area of the beads gives to the dispersibility is not clear, it can be presumed that when the specific surface area of the beads increases, the dispersive force of the beads increases, and as a result, the dispersibility of the dispersion liquid becomes excellent. If the specific surface area of the beads is too small, the dispersibility may be insufficient. Therefore, the specific surface area of the beads needs to be 0.10 m 2 / g or more. Further, in order to impart even higher dispersibility, it is preferably 0.12 m 2 / g or more. The upper limit of the specific surface area of the beads is not particularly limited, but considering the labor required for increasing the specific surface area, it is preferably 0.50 m 2 / g or less, and 0.40 m 2 / g or less.
m 2 / g or less is more preferable, and 0.30 m 2 /
It is particularly preferably g or less. In the present application, the “specific surface area” means the average value of the specific surface areas of the beads used, and various commercially available specific surface area measuring devices can be used. For example, NOVA manufactured by Kantachrome Co., Ltd.
2000 can be measured by the N 2 -BET method.

The material of the beads used in the media mill is not particularly limited, but beads containing at least one metal atom such as alumina, zirconia, steel and chrome steel are preferably used. Among these, zirconia beads having a high specific gravity are preferably used in consideration of the magnitude of kinetic energy due to the specific gravity.

The shape of the beads is not particularly limited and generally spherical ones are used. However, if the beads are too small, the kinetic energy of the beads becomes small, and there is a risk that the dispersion will not proceed. Moreover, since the handling becomes difficult, the average diameter of the beads is preferably 0.01 mm or more, more preferably 0.1 mm or more, and particularly preferably 0.5 mm or more. On the other hand, if the beads are too large, handling becomes difficult, and the number of beads per unit volume decreases, so that the dispersion efficiency decreases. Therefore, the average diameter of the beads is 10
It is preferably mm or less, more preferably 5 mm or less, and particularly preferably 3 mm or less.

The beads used in the present application can be prepared by various known means, and commercially available beads may be used. As a method of adjusting the specific surface area of the beads,
There is a method of applying beads having a specific surface area within a suitable range by using for a certain period of time in a bead mill, and when using the method, it is possible to disperse a dispersant that does not require dispersibility to apply the effects of the present invention. Since the used beads can be reused, it becomes economical. The specific surface area of the beads may be adjusted artificially, and in this case, a means of mixing the beads with each other in a low viscosity liquid may be used.

The media mill shown in FIG. 1 is a vertical attritor equipped with a vessel 1 which is a cylindrical closed container. A rotating shaft 2 is densely inserted into the vessel 1 from the outside of the vessel into the space inside the vessel along the axis of the vessel. A plurality of disk-shaped stirrers 3 are attached at predetermined intervals to a portion of the rotary shaft 2 located in the inner space of the vessel along a direction substantially perpendicular to the rotary shaft 2. In, the rotary shaft 2 is connected to a drive device (not shown). A large number of spherical beads 4 are filled inside the vessel 1. The attritor can be heated by being immersed in a hot water bath 5 having a heater therein. When it is desired to cool the dispersion liquid, an attritor in which the hot water bath 5 is replaced by a water bath or an ice bath may be used. When a preliminary dispersion step is provided, a heater provided in the hot water bath 5 may be used. A system in which the hot and cold baths 5 having different temperatures are replaced may be used.

The filling rate of the beads in the vessel may be determined according to the form of the vessel or the stirring bar and is not particularly limited. However, if the rate is too low, the solid fine particles in the secondary agglomeration state will be sufficiently dissolved. It may not be crushed, and excellent dispersibility may not be obtained. Therefore, it is preferably 20% by volume or more of the effective volume of the vessel, and more preferably 30% by volume or more. On the other hand, if the proportion is too high, abrasion of the beads may increase contamination. Therefore, it is preferably 90% by volume or less, and more preferably 80% by volume or less.
In addition, operating conditions such as shaft rotation speed, vessel internal pressure, and motor load may be appropriately selected according to the dispersant used.

The mixing ratio of the dispersant to the solid fine particles is
It cannot be specified unconditionally because it depends on the type of the dispersant used, the use of the dispersion, etc., but if the dispersant is too small, the solid fine particles may not be uniformly dispersed. Therefore, the amount of the dispersant is preferably 1 part by mass or more, more preferably 5 parts by mass or more, and particularly preferably 20 parts by mass or more, relative to 100 parts by mass of the solid fine particles. On the other hand, if the amount of the polymer dispersant is too large, the characteristics of the solid fine particles may not be exhibited. Therefore, the amount is preferably 1000 parts by mass or less, more preferably 500 parts by mass or less, and particularly preferably 300 parts by mass or less, relative to 100 parts by mass of the solid fine particles.

The total amount of the solid fine particles and the polymer dispersant in the dispersion medium depends on the type of media mill used,
Since it depends on the dispersion conditions and the like, it cannot be specified unconditionally, but if the total blending amount is too small, the amount of solid fine particles contained will be small, which may reduce the productivity. Therefore, it is preferably 0.01 parts by mass or more, more preferably 0.1 parts by mass or more, and particularly preferably 1 part by mass or more, relative to 100 parts by mass of the dispersion medium.
On the other hand, if the amount is too large, the viscosity of the dispersion liquid may be increased and the workability may be deteriorated. Therefore, it is preferably 300 parts by mass or less, more preferably 200 parts by mass or less, and particularly preferably 100 parts by mass or less with respect to 100 parts by mass of the dispersion medium.

Regarding the operation of producing a dispersion liquid using a media mill, when dispersion is performed using a media mill,
The quality of the dispersion changes when the same beads are used for a long time. Therefore, usually, the beads to be used are often replaced every time a fixed period of time elapses. If the change in the beads due to wear or the like is always constant, it is considered that the bead exchange cycle determined based on experience and the cycle of the quality change of the dispersion liquid match. However, the change of beads due to abrasion or the like changes based on a number of factors such as environmental temperature, humidity in the atmosphere, and frequency of using a bead mill. Therefore, in an actual system, it is difficult to match the exchange period of beads with the period of quality change of the dispersion liquid.

Here, it is possible to shorten the bead exchange period so that the dispersion liquid is not affected by the deterioration of the beads. However, the shorter the bead exchange period, the higher the manufacturing cost of the dispersion liquid. On the other hand, if the beads are exchanged after the quality change of the dispersion liquid occurs, the yield of the dispersion liquid production decreases due to the generation of the dispersion liquid with the quality change.

This problem can be solved by using the quantifiable factor of the specific surface area of the beads to control the operating conditions for dispersion production. That is, by using the index of the specific surface area of the beads to control the time of exchanging the beads, it is possible to optimize the operation efficiency of the dispersion liquid production using the media mill. This is very useful in the industrial production process.

The suitable range of the specific surface area of the beads used as an index of the exchange time of the beads needs to be determined according to the uniformity of the quality required for the dispersion to be produced, and is not particularly limited. However, in consideration of enhancing the dispersibility of the obtained dispersion liquid and the productivity of the dispersion liquid, the beads may be replaced when the specific surface area of the beads deviates from the range of 0.10 to 0.50 m 2 / g. Preferably 0.10
It is more preferable to replace when it deviates from the range of 0.40 m 2 / g, and even more preferable to replace it when it deviates from the range of 0.12 to 0.30 m 2 / g.

A carbon black dispersion was prepared, and the solvent was volatilized on a hot plate to dry and solidify. This one
Soxhlet extraction was performed on 4 g of the solidified product using NMP (200 g), and the amount of PVP in the extract was measured. The results are shown in Table 1. It is presumed that the larger the amount of PVP attached to carbon black and the stronger it is, the smaller the amount of free PVP not attached to carbon black and the lower the viscosity of the dispersion liquid. Therefore, the low dispersion viscosity means that the amount of PVP attached to carbon black is large,
Suggests that it is robust. Further, the smaller the amount of PVP extracted by Soxhlet extraction, the larger the amount of PVP attached to carbon black, indicating that the bond between the two is stronger. Therefore, it can be said that the smaller the amount of PVP extracted by Soxhlet extraction, the better the dispersion of carbon black. It can also be inferred that the efficiency of surface modification is excellent.
