A polyphase contactor has fixed contact members 32, 34, 36 located in slots in insulating housing halves, such as 26 for each phase unit and the members 32, 34 are secured by screws 18 to terminals 14 to retain the replaceable phase unit in position. Moving contacts 38 are operable to bridge the gaps between fixed contacts 32, 36, 34 and are carried on blocks 40,40<SP>1</SP> slidable between projections 42, 44 on the housing halves. Pins 46 freely pivoted in the blocks 40, 40<SP>1</SP> have integral studs 52 fitting in sleeves 54 freely pivoted at 48 to an actuator 50. Springs 58 urge the studs 52 away from the pivot 48 to an extent limited by the engagement of the head of the stud with the sleeve 54. The actuators 50 are urged by springs 64 into engagement with a ball bearing 88 on a shaft 78 parallel with the hose 10. The shaft 78 engages in a double-conical hole in the plunger of an electromagnet (Fig. 2, not shown) and is limited to lateral movement in the plane of the actuators 50 by a plurality of forked arms 80, 82 secured to parallel rotatable shafts 84, 86. The electromagnet may have a rectifier in series with its winding and may control auxiliary contact devices, one of which may connect an economy resistance in series with the winding.
