Abstract

985,283. Change - speed gear. P. P. RICHARD. June 12. 1961 [Aug. 12, 1960], No. 21116/61. Heading F2D. [Also in Division B7] A track-laying vehicle comprises an engine including a super-charger driven by a differential inserted between the engine output shaft and the load, a transmission line between the engine and each of two tracks, and two changespeed gears, one in each transmission line, the gears being individually operable to effect steering of the vehicle. In the Figure, the output shaft 2 of a diesel engine 1 drives the planet carrier 3 of epicyclic gearing, the sun wheel of which drives a supercharger 9 through gears 7, 8. The ring gear 4 is connected to an output shaft 5 which drives endless track sprocket wheels or the like 21, 22, through identical transmissions each comprising a gear 11 or 12, change-speed gear 13 or 14, and bevel gears 17 and 18, or 19 and 20. Driving the supercharger through an epicyolic differential gear permits the engine to develop full power while the speed of shaft 5 varies by a factor of about two and a half, the actual speed of the shaft depending on the load. The change-speed gears 13, 14, are thus required to vary the speed of drive by a factor of about 1À6, to give a final drive speed which can vary by a factor of four. Steering is effeeted by actuating one only of the change-speed gears, so that the intended inner track is driven at a lower speed than the intended outer track. In another embodiment, the gears 11, 12 drive pumps feeding hydraulic motors which drive the endless tracks. Each pump drives two motors, both motors driving the same track, and fluid may be pumped to one or the other or both motors to change the drive speed. The motors may be of different maximum power. Alternatively, each gear 11, 12 may drive two pumps one, or the other, or both of which may be selected to drive a single motor. In an electric transmission, electric generators and motors may replace the hydraulic pumps and motors, and two generators or motors may be connectable in series or in parallel.
