A drilling and bolting machine for mine galleries comprises a drill carriage 4, slidable on a pillar 2, and a bolt tightening device 32. Carriage 4 carries a hollow spindle 6, which is rotated from a pneumatic hydraulic, or electric motor 12, which drives a shaft 8, and gears 11, 9. An hydraulic or pneumatic jack 13 carries pulleys 18, 19 so that chains 14, 15 which pass over the pulleys, and which pass over further pulleys 16, 17 carried by the pillar and are connected to the carriage, cause the latter to be raised or lowered. Spindle 6 has two grooves 24 in its bore, which end in lower and upper helicoidal grooves 25, 26 and lugs 27 extending radially from drill 7, slide in the grooves. The hole 28 is drilled in two stages. In the first stage lugs 27 abut against the end of the lower groove 25, the drill is rotated, and the carriage is fed. When the carriage has reached the end of its travel, drill 7 is jammed in hole 28 by a slight lateral displacement of the machine, motor 12 is reversed, and the carriage is retracted until lugs 27 engage in the upper grooves 26. The drill is released, and the carriage is once again fed, to complete hole 28. The bolts 31 are locked in the drilled holes by a bolt tightener 32 which is rotated from motor 12 through a reduction unit 39, the latter containing gears 41, 42, 45, 46, a freewheel 43, and a shaft 38. The feed of tightener 32 is provided by an hydraulic or pneumatic jack 36.
